...not counting the North-South roadmiles from Tain to Inverness or airmiles from Inverness to Manchester. Tain -> Inverness Inverness -> Manchester - 1h 20m airtime Manchester -> New York/Newark - 7h 55m airtime 5 hours 35 minutes connect time New York/Newark -> Louisville SDF - 2h 44m airtime Worst part of the whole thing is the 2h 44m with my legs jammed behind the seat in front on an RJ145. How I detest the seating on an Embraer RJ145! I sometimes wonder if American Airlines are aware of the implements of torture they have responsibility for launching into the skies above the US? Now let's see: an overnight in Inverness to catch an early enough hop&skip to Manchester, to then spend almost 8 hours without a ciggie inside a Boeing 757-200, then wander about at Newark for 5 hours, then lose all blood supply to my legs while trapped in an Embraer RJ145 for almost 3 hours to arrive at Louisville SDF around 22.44 local time, find hotel, collapse on bed. All for a few hours jollies at TechRepublic of a Friday afternoon. Mmm? NO. I fear not. :(

But I won't be able to afford 2 nights in a hotel. That 8-hour drive up on the day of is going to take it out of me! If I can get the time off...

I'll have the RED one as Red is always faster. :^0 But there are a couple of things I need to say here someone messed up and didn't paint them right. They never looked like that when we handed the prototype over to the Marketing People to tart up to sell. :p Second the name is Pronounced Porsch not Porscha the marque is named after it's original Designer and maker Ferry Porsche who designed the VW Beetle among other things and if he insisted on being addressed as Dr Porsch not Porscha I think that is a reasonable way to continue to pronounce his name. :0 Great Pod Sonja even if I had to give Tamminkins a lesson on speaking real English. :8 Col 0:-)

I have Time Travel as I would arrive the day before I left in the US and then on the return trip I would loose a day completely. :( Besides SWMBO has banned me from visiting the US ever again seems that I like a few of those places in CA a little too much for my Bank Managers Good. :D Though as I no longer have the Beetle and the Ducati doesn't need any Hot Up Parts that only leaves the Mercedes Cars that I have given to her to buy parts for and they don't require Hot Up Bits either. That would only ruin their value. :( So I have no valid reason for visiting the US and suffering the pain that would come about from it. :^0 Anyway got to go now as I'm busy today with a Surprise Party for my Mothers Birthday from last Sunday. Just what I need 80 People who are all family or her close fiends and I have to behave myself. :_| SWMBO has just walked to the Laundry to torture my jeans and Press them. OH the Inhumanity of it all who wears ironed jeans? I tried to save then and attempted to stop her but she just got nasty and steamrolled straight over me. She was laughing as she kicked sand in my eyes. :( Col 0:-)

Might be an idea - folks who live near each other might be able to share a ride together, and those planning on staying the same amount time - sharing a room? Would cut the cost down some. Just my 2 cents... -Tammy [_]3

As we use to have a Porsche company locally (not sure if its still there or not, since this was over 20 yrs ago) - and my ex worked there for several years - one of the things they stressed is saying Porsche as "Porsch-uh" not Porsch. Now I got to look it up and do some homework :p -Tammy [_]3

A stinkingly rich bloke (let's bring the joke up to date and say he's a Merchant Banker! ;) ) - anyway the Banker arrives home after an arduous day losing other people's money, then having had to suffer the ignominy of the equally arduous task of sitting for an hour on the commuter train back to his daily point of origin. He strolls in through the wrought iron gates of his palatial home, up the long and winding driveway and as he's approaching the front door of his mansion he spots a Gypsy with a pot of RED PAINT and a 4" brush, slopping great wads and splurges of this red paint all over the bonnet of his shiny sports car, sitting outside his front door. He rushes up to the Gypsy, shouting and waving his arms in desperation and insists that the Gypsy explain just WTF he thinks he's doing. The Gypsy calmly tells him that he knocked on the door and asked the lady of the house if there were any odd jobs needing doing, she's given him the paint and the brush and he was only doing what she'd told him to do. The Banker bursts in through his door, rushes into the kitchen and says to his wife "WTF did you tell that Gypsy to paint my car for?" ............. ............ ........... .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . The wife says in reply, "I didn't, I told him to paint the PORCH !!" :^0 *edited for ... , .. , . , impact!

Where we meet Baltar's cranky old father....though the accent is wrong (Irish), I think we've met Old Mycroft. Baltar even calls him a git. (Though Dad gets his licks in too). James

OldER Mycroft

Now where could that aroma be coming from? Oh! I know, just above my eyes! :O A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... I may have made some tentative remark that might have led someone to that indefinite conclusion - then I discovered the 'popularity' of American Airlines' use of the next best thing to PELE to come out of Brazil - the Embraer RJ145 !! And you *pout* ?? :D

a KY accent though? Gawd, do we really want the rest of the world thinking we ALL talk like THAT? :0 Now, if he were to come to Michigan where we don't HAVE an accent, he would be safe! :p

as soon as I read "10-12 hour drive", I knew you had to be close by!! Medford 6-9 hrs depending on the # of smokes stops & if you stopped at Costco & had a new set of tires installed (no sales tax) Eugene or Salem - 10-14 hrs - also depending on whether you're pulling a trailer Portland 14-16 hrs depending on # of shopping stops (no sales tax)if god is on my side, Fry's in Wilsonville is closed I've driven I5 a few hundered times in the last 35 years and agree that the train is too expensive & takes too long

good thing I am used to a lot of travel. Driving down to Detroit tomorrow because ThingTwo has a competition. 5 hours round trip, and the event lasts 5 hours. long day. bonus, just got a call for a job interview, scheduled for monday. it says part time, but will see just what they are looking for when I get there. As long as it is at least 30 hours, and not 6 hours a day x five days.... four days, great! I could live off that. four 8 hour days at $25/hr, and life would be just grand until something better came along that offered benefits.

Has wireless all the way. I lived without a car when I was in Ottawa, but visiting Toronto or my parents in Brantford was a bit much. So I learned that I could take a train to Toronto in the evening (hour long) and then catch the midnight train to Ottawa, and get a sleeper. I'd wake up in Ottawa, change my clothes, have breakfast and go to work. James

JamesRL
JamesRL

Sarnia would be closer for both of us I think. But that would add to the drive the next morning - though thats still not a bad idea. Might have to start earlier - I would want to aim for being in Lousiville for lunch, just in case of an accident etc. James

jdclyde
jdclyde

Even if I had originally hoped to be there Thursday. would you probably cross at Sarnia or Windsor?

jdclyde
jdclyde

it is a nice, relaxed form of travel. You get to where you are going, rested. And everytime you stop in a small city, there is usually an open access point, giving you about 5 minutes to check up on your por... um, I mean your email.... :D

JamesRL
JamesRL

I was kinda shying away from it, I have a big trip on July 8th to Europe. But, I could drive down to Detroit (or somewhere just outside) after work on the Thursday, grab a motel, meet you for breakfast (early) and drive down to Louisville from there. To do it in one shot - 10 hours/574 miles from Toronto is something I would have done when younger, but not in the cards for me at this age. James

The Scummy One
The Scummy One

time.... timing... Around Thanksgiving, I looked into taking a train from here to Oregon. The closest time was an evening train from the day I would have taken off work. Then it would arrive at the destination 16+ hours later. It is a 10 - 12 hour drive (with stops) or less than 2 hours on a plane. I wouldnt mind the stops, however, I could have left in the morning and been at the destination, even stopping for smokes and shopping, and still arrived before the train would have pulled into the station.

Hasn't put the kaibosh to a job, for me, yet.

jdclyde

not to accidentally get a job before then. Kind of hard to ask for a few days off when you just start. B-) But then again, if you inform them of a prescheduled trip when you get hired, that will give a good indication of what type of place it would be to work for.

but it seems like only the bus goes to Louisville. :( If I could have taken the train the whole way, it would have been a done deal.

jdclyde
jdclyde

would have to take the bus from chicago, and spend over 7 hours on the bus. That doesn't include the 5 hours to get to chicago. Looks like I am driving! Better stock up on the red bull! B-)

Several Years ago the Marketing Division came up with the idea to Pronounce it Porscha to sound More "Posh." And to try to establish a Brand Image among the Market of those who would buy a Porsche. They wanted to sound more Exclusive and different to how the company was seen previously but as this all came about after Ferry Snr Died and the Marketing side was allowed to have more influence anything is possible. I was speaking to my Older Brother well one of them tonight any my Mothers Birthday Party and he said something about the Marketing Side changing the Pronunciation of the Name for the same reasons so maybe that's correct. I don't know for sure as I was no longer working there in Germany by then and from my experience it's always been the Yuppies whop pronounce it that way and that is my Big bugbear. ;) Now about painting the car properly? :D Col

The Scummy One
The Scummy One

I am going to start saying it like OM Porch Hmm, maybe even throw in a few Porche (porshay pronunciation). :^0 that HAL unit might just start asmoking and finally put itself out :^0

tcavadias

that some of his factories are telling folks another way to say it I actually grew up saying "Porsh" made sense to me to drop the e - then when my ex started working at the Porshe factory locally - the head guys from Germany (wonder why Bosch doesn't have an e :D ) - informed everyone, that is not how you say it, you say it like this... {shrugs} Didn't make much difference to me - same car regardless of how you say it - so not sure why they were so big on how someone said it anyway. I would like a Porsche/Porsch please Sorry Sir we can't sell you that until you say it right ;-) -Tammy [_]3

HAL 9000
HAL 9000

And regionally meet the Man himself for a 2 year period I'll go with his pronunciation. :D Also when the 959 was handed tot he Marketing Stylists they where told they could change anything at all provided that they didn't touch anything. This effectively meant that they could paint it any way that they wanted but if they even changed something as simple as the Wiper Blades the Engineers where going to hang them out to dry. :^0 And I wasn't the one to say it though I didn't disagree. :0 Col 0:-)
