Server room nightmare challenge

Submit your original photos of messy, chaotic, or downright dangerous server rooms. If our staff picks your photo as one of the top three favorites, you'll earn free TechRepublic swag!

Your server room may be perfect--every Ethernet cable in place, all the KVM and power cables neatly tucked into the sides of the racks. Unfortunately, some server rooms are nothing but living examples of bad planning and worse execution.

In his gallery, "What not to do in a server room," Joshua Hoskins illustrates some of the classic server room faux pas--chaotic cabling, machines stacked on top of each other, and dust everywhere.

TR Dojo Server Room Nightmare Challenge

I know many of my fellow TechRepublic members have come across or currently work in less-than-perfect server rooms. So, I'm issuing the first TR Dojo Server Room Nightmare Challenge!

You have from now until Friday, October 8, 2010 at 5:00 PM EDT to submit your photos of messy, chaotic, or just plain scary server rooms. Please send these original photos, along with a little information about the photo you're submitting, and your TR username to trdojo at techrepublic.com.

The TechRepublic editorial staff will select their three favorite photos from all the entries, and the TechRepublic members who submitted those photos will receive some free swag!

Unfortunately (well really fortunately I guess) I have no pictures to send in from my workplace. About the worst I have in my building is the closet where half of the closet is a janitor's closet (with a sink and everything) and then the half behind the door is a wiring closet. They are a decent distance apart though so it really is better than it sounds.

I have one or two to add. Let's see if I can find them...

I'll start taking pictures tomorrow. Expect a portfolio of the good, the bad, and the 'wtf'. :D

You, sir, have my interest. I love gawking at slow-motion train wrecks.

And will submit pictures. Notice the stainless steel shelf in the one picture? That's the "server rack". Some of my stores don't even have that.

That's nothing. I am pretty confident I have those beat by a longshot. You'll have to wait until the contest is over though to possibly see them. If they are not selected by some chance, then I don't want anyone seeing them. LOL

That makes the room I had as a teenager look pristine...

The first photo is bad but the second one is simply terrible. How could anyone find where the cables are going in that Patch Panel. More importantly how can you try to claim that the person you have just killed was anything other than a deliberate murder. I love messy cable Junctions they allow you to get away with Murder. :D Col

And those are two of the less-shocking rooms in my stores.
