At one time, computer support folks usually found the remote access sites more of a problem than a help. Keeping users from utilizing such services to access either their home computer from work or their office computer from home has often presented us with a challenge.

I recall an instance when a friend of mine at another company had a user who would log in to his home computer to initiate stock trades. In short, he was a stock day trader, and he monitored and traded stocks all day long -- from his home computer via a remote access site. Besides being a huge loss in productivity (which may or may not be a user support issue), he presented a security risk that certainly shouldn't be overlooked.

Lately, however, I've heard of more and more support pros using them -- actually preferring those sites for their own remote access.

Are they a blessing or a curse? Or a double-edged sword?

Remote Access is a blessing as remotely accessing computers provides resolution to many problems regarding business work. Using tools such as RHUB, LogMeIn, Teamviewer etc. one can remotely access his computer, provide technical support to his customers from anywhere anytime without hassle of physically being present at the client location.

I've been using logmein for a couple of months and can't live without it any more. I use it to access my home PC to get stuff I need and to test applications that I can't test in our work area due to network and PC configs.

I see them as a blessing. I use a website to act as my remote access hub, and so far it's been great. Especially when we need to test something at work from an external stand point, it has allowed us to check web based projects. Not to mention it helps when you have a friend or family that needs help and you don't feel like driving over there, Crossloop comes in real handy.

From a support perspective, they're a curse - with poor connectivity in New Zealand, and the wide variety of variables that come into play it's a nightmare to keep on top of. As a result, we try to ensure anyone wanting remote access has a very, very good reason and insist they run our corporate anti-virus (Sophos). We also have limited bandwidth (remote access is via Citrix) and users think remote access will be wonderful, but when they get it, they learn it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Certainly. I've been using LogMeIn for my site support and has helped me much for simple support cases like showing the users, what's where. Easily an advantage but with the benefits, come its potential to be abused too.

Is that good ole Netmeeting is faster than CrossLoop (I like CrossLoop too). You have to open it up on at least one end if NAT is involved but big deal. Not sure why other than just eliminating the middle man. Unbelievable, at least to me, how handy Netmeeting still is after all these years.

Have used most of them out there - VNC, Gotomypc, RDP, but have settled on Team Viewer. Couldn't be without it really. Yet I think your question has more to do with end users employing such tools to access computers outside of the work environment. Unless there is a legitimate use - like a mobile user remoting into their work desktop to access applications and files - I would prevent this if possible. Way too many potential risks and whats worse you can never really get your arms around what these risks are. If you haven't tried Team Viewer give it a go!

Any tool is a blessing to those who benefit from it's use in their duties. On the other hand the use of tools that can cross network boundaries by those who don't have a legitimate need for them in their professional duties can easily cause headaches for all concerned.
