The information stated above is excellent and the definitive words on the topic.

The uses of HTTP seem endless as they are being expanded upon and added to each day. In simplest terms HTTP is the transmission protocol (rules) for data to travelaround the WWW.

In order for a server to be “labeled” a Web server, or a browser to be labeled a web browser, it must have the ability to use http, generally as its primary protocol. Either the server or the browser can be enabled to use other protocols but without http it really isn’t a “web” server or browser.

I include these two links since they are just a little bit easier to get the ideas from then the excellent links offered already.

An overview of Web Server and how they work.

      http://webcompare.internet.com/webbasics/index.html

This link is to a Administrative Guide for an actual web server. The information is presented to give a person who would have to install and administer a web server a background on the Web and the elements of it. It is a bit dated, as the web has expanded since it was first produced, but it contains all the basics in a rather friendly and informative manner.

      The link is:
      http://vms.process.com/~help/help.html#toc

Start reading at The World Wide Web section
and continue through Internet Security and Secure Servers.

You don’t need to read the other sections as they are only about that particular server and would only confuse you.

      Hope this helps you.
