It’s hard to be unaware of Adobe Flash if you spend more than five minutes or so on the Internet. I usually hear the round of muttering every other morning (at least I don’t think it’s just me) when the near-daily update message rears its head. Of course, there are purists — not to mention Apple’s well-known aversion — who refuse to use Flash and variously work around it.
Adobe is responding to the great gnashing of teeth — but mostly Apple, probably — by developing new software called Edge that uses HTML5 to do some of the fancy things that it has previously relied on its browser-based plug-in to do. CNET’s Stephen Shankland reports on the details in “Adobe dives into HTML with new Edge software“:
The public preview release is just the beginning for Edge. It lets people add animation effects to Web pages, chiefly with CSS controlled by JavaScript. For example, when a person loads a Web page designed with Edge, text and graphics elements gradually slide into view.
The public preview is available, right now for free, at the Adobe Labs website. From the Adobe Edge page:
Adobe® Edge is a new web motion and interaction design tool that allows designers to bring animated content to websites, using web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.
Edge will be updated regularly to add new functionality, stay ahead of evolving web standards, and incorporate user feedback to provide the best functionality and experience possible. This is an early look at Edge with more capabilities to come.
