I usually add the -f (force) which kills applications that will not close. From console: shutdown -r -f -t 15 From remote: shutdown -r -f -m \\ -t 15 (must have local admin rights and firewall configured correctly) Without the -f the machine will get stuck in the shutdown state, and you will not be able to reconnect, requiring you to call someone to hit the reset button - not fun when the machine is on the other side of the planet and everyone is sleeping.
