Poll: Is there a Microsoft Kinect in your Xbox future?

The TechRepublic Windows Blog member poll question: Is there a Microsoft Kinect in your Xbox future?

I have been playing video games since the state of the art was a game called Pong. My platform of choice has always been the computer. The last console I owned was an Intellivision II. But that doesn't mean that I don't have appreciation for the consoles. The Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii are all great game platforms in their own way, but I prefer the flexibility of a PC.

Recently, Microsoft has been pushing a new user interface for their Xbox platform called Kinect. The innovation of this device is that you don't need a separate controller to interact with the games displayed on your Xbox. Your body is the controller. The Kinect uses a system of cameras and sensors to detect your movements and interprets them in relation to the game being played.

This is a great technology that everyone I have talked to really likes. Apparently, it works great and is a lot of fun. Are you interested in the Kinect for your home? Do you already have one? What are your thoughts? Do you recommend it?

This actually is the evolution of gaming as we know it. It's already a step up from sitting in one spot hitting buttons. I know my kids are looking forward to it :)

Here's an idea: get off your ass. I'm so sick of video games emulating life and life tasks. There's no accomplishment or betterment when it comes to video games, they're just time wasters. So, you want to play baseball? Go to a diamond and play. You want to white water raft? Get some cheap gear on craigslist and give it a shot. I don't like the future I see resulting from wasteful and pointless technology embedding bad social habits in the minds of younger generations. How is the dependency to technology that helps you ignore the real world any better than substance abuse?

I have heard this argument before, but it I have never understood exactly what you mean. Why is the question either / or? Can't I play video games and go outside whitewater rafting? Doing one does not mean I cannot do the other - they are not mutually exclusive.

What level do I need to be to reach the outside?

I see these things as a waste of time and brain drainers. EMD

Already have a PS3 and upgraded with the Move version now ..... Move controllers can sense multiple axis of movement .... including twisting motions and acceleration/power used in the games, much more fun than just standing there waving your arms and legs around! That and still refuse to move to XBox with their have to 'pay to play' online ....

To me the Wii controller, Sony's Move and Microsoft's Kinect are gimmicks which as of yet have not shown me any reason to want them. I won't rule out the possibility that they may give me a reason to purchase one of them in the future but for now I have no desire for them.

I have no interest in 3D at all. Will you really wear glasses to watch every movie?

But I dislike consoles, I especially dislike the XBox.

I would not be surprised to see a Kinect or similar system for the PC in the not too distant feature. But I am not much for dancing games. I wonder if you could translate motion like swinging a two-handed axe?

Or firing a bow :). Picture a game like Mount & Blade...

I have it and I think it's fun. My wife usually hates video games, but she likes the Kinect and actually asks to play it. It's great for anti-gamers :)
