Managing your team members is somewhat like managing a project: You need a plan and you need to keep up with what's going on. One way to address both of those needs is to conduct regular one-on-one review sessions that allow you to map out developmental and performance goals and to give employees a chance to air grievances, clarify expectations, and discuss obstacles, achievements, and personal objectives. Done right, your one-on-one sessions will foster better communications with employees--and you'll find annual reviews easier to conduct and far less likely to lead to any disconnects or surprises.
