If you have any interest in using the Linux operating system you will most likely want to get to know one of a handful of desktops available: GNOME, KDE, Enlightenment, XFCE, Compiz, etc. Of those desktops, two have reached mass distribution and popularity: GNOME and KDE. Each desktop is incredibly user-friendly and robust. In many ways they are very similar to the desktops you are already accustomed to: Windows and Mac OS X. In some minor ways, however, they are different.
