The first step in preparing documentation for a virtual environment is to identify the infrastructure components. This is not so much focusing on the virtual machines, but on the host environment. Once the components are identified, you can then rapidly create documentation that is nearly as agile as the virtual environment you are maintaining.
We have provided a sample diagram that you can customize for use in your virtualization environment. This sample diagram can be used in your virtualized environment and can be customized to your needs. One key note is that the diagram does not provide for virtual machine configuration or resource management strategies; this is because the server virtualization environment is a critical starting point for a successful implementation.
The sample diagram is saved in Visio 2002 format and has callouts in various areas in red boxes that can be removed after you apply your customizations. The diagram can be customized for large or small implementations. This sample is an environment using HP ProLiant DL 380 G5 host systems and VMware ESX server.
