Wiki
shelleydoll 7th Aug 2002
After reading this article, I downloaded and installed MoinMoinWiki - was a very simple process, and was up and runninng in no time. The syntax is easy to learn, and I've been consolidating the hordes of notepad files I've got scattered all over my hard drive into this one useful resource. I can see how this would be a great tool for team documentation.

Nice article, too!

A wiki will grow organically as people add new pages and comments, and after a while it can be very difficult for readers to find that "nugget" of information. Try reading the PortlandPatternRepository to find something specific and you will see what I mean. I always find that I'm lost in a labyrinth of tangential discussions.

I suspect you either need to refactor regularly and mercilessly to keep some sort of structure for the reader, or you need add and maintain that structure for it to be useful to the reader: perhaps a table of contents or a keyword index.
This is a problem that is not mentioned so often. To be fair, I
think it arises largely because we include in a wiki a lot of
information that otherwise would have been lost completely
(because it's so easy to add information to a wiki). So in a way
it's a reflection of the strength of the wiki concept and design.
Nevertheless, it is a real problem and to solve it we need to
separate out the various characteristics of the original wiki and
decide which ones to keep as they are, which ones to jettison,
and which ones to strengthen. Some of the wiki "clones", like
Twiki, are interesting experiments along these lines.
