great article!
The last time I tried to get Apache 1.3.x running with PHP X on windows, I gave up in frustration and turned to Linux.
Cheap, standard and easy.

But hey maybe it's time to try it out again...

Can you set it up as a seperate server tied into a Windows server as well?
Thanks for the praise! I'm glad you enjoyed the piece.

You're quite right. It IS simpler to do it on Linux, assuming you know your way around Linux.

Look for more by Peter and I in future. We'll be tackling MySQL and Postgres and similar stuff, on Linux and on Windows (where applicable).
and you can run windows and mac apps. also
boot into Linux if you have a partition or drive
handy.

I run X so I dont have to waste my time with
Linux.

A day late

Good article, well written and easy to follow along. Had it been posted a day sooner I would have used it. As it was I installed Apache and PHP on my Win2k box the day before this article posted. I've now read through 3 tutorials on installing, along with the info from the Apache manual and the php manual. Each has a slightly different variation on the main theme and all will work.

As an Apache/PHP/MySQL newbie myself I would suggest that anyone else out there getting started should readat least 2-3 tutorials on the same topic before starting out. Following the tutorials works great, but understanding the basics behind the variations will teach a lot more about the software!

Very Simple
wiggledbits 26th Apr 2003
I have read a number of articals and sections of books that covered this topic. I most always ran into a problem or two that needed some time to correct. The only problem I ran into using your instructions was that php4apache2.dll was actually in C:\PHP\sapi directory so I had to change
LoadModule php4_module ?c:/php/php4apache2.dll?
to
LoadModule php4_module ?c:/php/sapi/php4apache2.dll?

After that little change Apache and PHP are up and running.

Now to get httpd.conf set up and secured with Apache running under its own group etc.

Now if you would add to your instructions how to get pear to work with PHP and Apache 2 on Windows. happy

It seems that the instructions are even worse and lots of people have trouble setting up the Pear components of PHP under win.

Thanks again

Funny you should mention that happy, I've been exploring that problem and you're right, it'w worth an article!

Why do you use the experimental Apache2 SAPI?
The Apache 2 SAPI is not yet stable and Apache 2 users should use the CGI SAPI to intregrate PHP into Apache 2.x
If you are using Windows,
you can find an installation package which configures your PHP and Apache for you automatically at www.firepages.com.au.
This is cool stuff, minus the hassle of configuration

2.0 is new & better, the API is updated, module ordering is tidied up ... more reasons at

We're almost exclusively a windows shop - however when we needed an inexpensive chat solution, we decided to run Windows 2k w/Apache and PHP.

After almost a week (and nightly reboots & consultations with the vendor) we came to the conclusion thatwe'd move to Redhat and run Apache and PHP. The results have been 100x better.

In short I can't say we've been pleased running any of the above listed components in Windows!
Which versions of Apache & PHP?

pb
I'd be very interested to read an article on how to do this on Linux. Perhaps using Mandrake or RedHat. Good article though!
There is a easy way to get Apache, php and MySQL to work on Windows. Just go to www.foxserv.net website and download the installer package. It's so easy that any Windows user can make it work.

Module vs. CGI
tobereplied 21st Oct 2003
I somehow downloaded the CGI version of PHP, so am I missing out on something? Is there any way I could switch to PHP module? I did not have the php4apache2.dll file mentioned in the article (great article!) Will this effect development at all? Thanks! Michael
I'm still trying to install Apache 2 and PHP 4 following this article's instructions. The article is very clear and probably the best out there. But in the end, I still get an error about loading c:/php/php4apache2.dll

How do I get to the command line screen author refers to
And i should have read others' comments first. My file was also in the sapi folder. I had checked on my own but was confusing the php4apache2.dll with php4ts.dll somehow. It works now.

Once, again, great tutorial. Best one out there I think
This had me pulling my hair out, and that's not good because my hair means everything to me! If my hair leaves me imma do something stupid!!
