I can't help but pitch our Naview service here - it is specifically designed for information architects and it helps create easier navigations (and taxonomies) through prototyping and testing.

I am glad you emphasise the importance of testing towards the end of the article. With the advent of specialised IA testing tools like Naview (there are others, too) there is really no excuse for publishing untested information structures anymore.
