Index Server is good and you can't beat the price (which is why we use it, of course), but the results can be very weird if your search terms include numbers. And since our users are often looking up legal cites [for example, "MCR 2.116(C)(8)"], this has been a problem for us. If anyone knows any search engines that do a better job with that type of search, or knows how to tweak Index Server to provide better results, please let me know. Thanks!
I also wrote an article for Builder.com on Lucene, the article was published last week. It's a Java-based search engine, so if you are running an all IIS/ASP infrastructure, it might not be the right tool for you.
Looks like a solid article, but there are lots of these index server articles out there on the Internet. Win2k has been out over 4 years now, and then there's 2003...
We're not using Windows Server 2003 yet (IIS 6.0). This article is mostly for developers who didn't know about Index Server. I've found that most developers don't know about it, which isn't bad - it is fairly limited, compared to a more general search solution like Lucene or Inktomi.
builder.com has a big audiance so you never know if this is the first site the person came to. even if you think everyone knows it it is still reference. Plus anything that is written to teach is to applouse for. Do you have articles that teach people about search engines ?
all I'm saying is that 4.0 is near the end of it's product lifecycle - and based on personal experience it's tough finding even an adaequate article on indexing services for 2000.
Great article and I agree with you that young generation spend a lot of time on social networking sites as now people are quiet interested in sharing their views with other people and there you can get your own group who are interested on the same topic that you are interested in...
