Linux and its cousins: Similarly, the *BSD variants, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD (am I forgetting one?) are excellent in these same roles...and in fact can be superior to Linux depending on your requirements. For example, OpenBSD is excellent as a router platform because it is tremendously secure (it's been undergoing security audit for four years), is very fast, and very stable. Plus, did I mention it only updates once every six months, as opposed to the numerous annual RedHat Linux releases?
I do note that Linux still hasn't made it onto the boards as far as the "Workstation" category is concerned.
