There are also incidents of these occuring not due to malware,
or breached email accounts. Some spammers have figured out that many
people will open these emails, and by embedding 1x1 pixel images in the
message, can confirm the email address as a live person. Also, some of
these email messages are what are termed "phishing" attempts...an
attempt to trick the user into handing out passwords, bank account details
or other forms of identity theft. If you are positive you did not send the
message, either delete the spam, or contact your email service provider
to see if they would want you to forward the suspect email.
