Ugly
yobtaf 8th Nov 2006
I guess it's meant to appeal to kids.

As an artist, I find it extremely unattractive.

This is a cool design, not for work but for home. For a tech to use!!
Robertmro,

Alienware has always offered bold case designs that appeal to PC enthusiasts, but I've never considered them for "kids". I'm curious what style computer case you find appealing.

Seriously! I would really like to know what your preferece would be in a case. If these seem ugly to you, I am very curious what design styles would please your personal taste.

The colors are lovely, the shape is exciting. The technology is fantastic. Please help me see what negative points you see in this offering.

Bill, the plastic-decorations-on-a-box sort of case has been overdone, and although Alienware does it better than most, this whole branch of computer "design" has veered down the same rut as the auto industry did with tail fins in the 1950s. Plymouth had the highest, sharpest and longest tail fins, but what the heck GOOD did they do? (Well, OK, they sold a lot of cars happy

For truly *elegant* case designs, form should follow function -- look at designs like the Cray-1 or Thinking Machines' CM-5 for designs which achieved true and memorable style as an element of function rather than merely as a means to hide it (or an alternative TO it).

(Almost) nobody wants a Cray in their office, but the genuine engineering elegance of that design could inspire some truly stunning, yet technologically "sensible," PC cases.

I agree

I agree, I could make a better looking pc any day of the week. It's funny how these mass produced gaming pcs always have all the best parts but rarely has any thought been applied to the asthetics. If I was to buy a $5000 machine I would want it to be the most innovative and best looking machine on the planet. This is pretty ho-hum.

Too J-Pop

Alienware has certainly had some unusual case designs, but this one looks disappointingly "toy-ish," like something Mattel or Playskool might have come up with. Internally it's a beaut, both technically and aesthetically, but I'd be a little embarassed to put that Akihabara cabinet out where people could see it.

Surely the point of water cooling is too get rid of the fans in the case.

Looking at this pc, there is a cpu fan, a northbridge fan and two fans on each of the graphics cards thats 6 fans that shouldnt be in there.... the point of the water cooling is?????

Seems this pc is all mouth and no trousers. Well to a serious overclocker.

The lesson here is DIY happy happy cooling.
Who needs water cooling when you have a freezer. Yes i have my computer (not cd drives or floppy drives) in my freezer. I have not overclock it as yet but at a push i could make it work at least to 5ghrz. Motherboard is a Asus Striker with quad core intel prosseser. So no case either. I am at a loss when the power goes off in my house though.

Ummm..

I don't know of any computers, case or not, that run very well without power.
Hi Drive Guy,
I have the computer hooked up to an external power supply. When i mean "external" i mean "outside" of the freezer. By the way it works well (as long as it is below -2c), any lower and i will have my harddrive(s)freezing up.

I guess to a certain extent, less fans would be a consideration. But the main point of water cooling (to a serious overclocker) is lower core temps vs. air cooling, which would provide more room for overclocking. Unfortunately, water cooling solutions are still sort of in their infancy. They aren't that efficient yet, unless you look to the more expensive offerings. So, they require the assistance of air cooling too. I'm more interested in the phase change solutions, which would be similar to putting your cpu and motherboard in the freezer. Which, by the way, you shouldn't try because of the condensation for obvious reasons.

I thought you guys were gonna "crack it open?"

this looked more like an advert for alienware...which is fine, but removing the side panel is hardly what I would call a dissection.

show us that processor, the mobo, powersupply, take that gpu out an show us! we want the guts and gore!!
I am hardly the person to Yay or Nay a design of something; I mean, I hardly noticed my wife had dyed her hair from blond to brown;
But, some people pay more for looks than for simplicity.
Opinions on design and good taste can be compared to a butt: There are at least to sides and something in the middle...
Hey! Make them pink and I'll buy one for my daughter! anything to get her hooked on technical stuff happy

I was looking for some good graphic pictures of how that water cooling was hooked up and working, not to mention how the beast comes apart and all I get are a bunch of stock photos from the AlienWare Website! Send this to the "cracking open" guy and let him have at it!!!!

Yea, give me a break here. I thought we were Dissecting Aliens here not trying to sell them. Show us the guts and gore so that we know what makes them tick.

I got had too... Their email is badly constructed: You want the guts, you have to click on the section title in the email which will take you to http://ct.techrepublic.com.com/clicks?t=38508835-701b58823b0617147fdc2c50447d2860-bf&s=5&fs=0

Fascinating

The water cooling has me interested. I've been looking at the price and performance differences between it and the traditional cooling fans. I'll will have to take a closer look at what's inside.
