Nice discussion on the history of Debian. The apt system is the defining characteristic of all Debian distributions and is the best package management system period. It is the only system that is better than the Microsoft method of application management. There, I said it. RPM sucks. Yum sucks. Emerge is cool, but Gentoo takes too much time for a production rebuild unless you're a real bad ass.
