While Vista's Start Menu feature is perhaps a nice upgrade from XP, I have encountered a major problem with it - used to be I could go to Documents/Settings, pull up Start Menu/Programs and add folders/reorganize to my hearts content. Now I find I'm denied access to D/S with no other apparent route to my program listing, and I've tried every trick I can think of to gain access to D/S - turn off UAC, r-clk and change permissions, different admin account, etc. Seems all I can do with Vista is sort alphabetically.
Any suggestions?

You have the choice of using the Vista start Menu or the Windows 2000 one. What if i want the Windows XP version of the Start Menu instead? Why did they skip over that one??

Same question!
pworlton 20th Mar 2009
I realize this thread is old, but it still pops up at the top of my Google search and I still haven't found an answer to this question. I liked the WinXP start menu, and I find the Vista start menu to be an aggravating replacement. I LIKE my programs to pop OUT, not IN a tiny window that I have to scroll. I LIKE having big "Log Off" and "Shut Down" buttons on my start menu (what's with the stupid tiny arrow???). Unfortunately, I can't live without my recently/frequently used programs right there, so the 2k menu doesn't do it either.

I think I could live with the annoyance of the Vista UAC if they hadn't messed with my start menu. So despite having 10 partner licenses for Vista, I'm still running all my computers on XP.
Actually, I read this article in the search for an answer for my Q'... Why my 'Show windows previes (thumbnails)' option is in disabled condition in the Taskbar properties dialog box?

My Operating system is Windows Vista Starter....

That option is there but diabled..

Please help me
Recently I believe I had problems with a virus that completely screwed up my computer. Since then I do not have a task/start bar or menu. I cannot put icons directly on my desktop, I have to keep them in a window and if that windows accidentally gets closed I have to restart the computer to get it back because there aren't any links. What happened and what do i do.

Add Shortcut to Right Hand Side
KaiGusto Updated - 1st Jul 2010
is there a way to add new shortcuts on the right hand side of the start menu (under 'Documents, Pictures, Music, Games). I want to add 'Videos' and link it to 'Videos' in My Documents..
Hi Greg, I have a problem with configuring my taskbar, when I add more toolbars and accommodation and arrange the icons, when rebooting the computer, everything is lost, what I can do to stay organized as I left ?, thanks.
I accidently erased the pictures directory and then recreated it. Now the Start menu can't find it (click the pictures button and it has no where to go - properties are blank). The customization tab no longer has Pictures in the list. How can I restore it?
