It reminds me of some other firewall, antivirus, and internet security software as well. It is all too funny and painfully too true. Users hate these notices. They call me to often to make a decision on how to respond - allow? deny? punt?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't MAC been doing that for years?? If you have admin rights on Windows you can go to town installing software..but with MAC it always asks you to authenticate..
Yep, the commercials are funny - no doubt about it. With Intel advertising slow-motion doppelgangers and Microsoft phoning it in with the "Wow starts Now" campaign, Apple is spanking the industry on the PR front. Regardless, from a technical standpoint, this commercial is odd. The interchange between Mac & PC look like firewall confirmations (think Zone Alarm). But the ?You are coming to a sad realization? comment is clearly a stab at User Account Control (UAC) in Vista since it has nothing to do with the firewall. Just thought I would point that out on a Friday morning before coffee. 
I'm almost embarrassed for Apple since this PC vs Mac ad campaign.
The ones about Vista are Funny. GiveVista a try and you will see that they hit vista right on. Vista needs a lot of work, more so the when XP came out.
Firstly I love these commercials. And this one is funny as all heck. However, as I write this from a MacBook Pro running Vista, I feel the need to point out that:
UAC is about expressly granting permission for an application to access resources and perform operations that are out side of a base level of privilege granted to a running application.
Unfortunately for Mr. Mac, his OS does the SAME THING (with prompts and sudo). The only difference is that Apple removed the requirement of Admin Permissions for many things that should require it.
And Windows is insecure?

Better take a closer look at MAC OS. It's full of holes as well. The biggest difference I see is that Windows is explioted more than MAC.
But if it wasn't for Microsoft, Mac wouldn't even be around. Many seem to forget that Microsoft came to Apples aid which help them get out of a near bankruptcy. But who things about the past???

What's the YouTube URL for viewing that video? I'm on FreeBSD, where I have to install Linux emulation to get YouTube videos to play directly from the page if I want sound, so I download and play locally. That doesn't work so well from a TR URL, though, so I'd like the YouTube URL if you don't mind.

. . . and I just watched it. HOLY CRAP, is that funny. It's the funniest Mac vs. PC ad I've seen so far, by a LONG shot.

This ad is based on the idea that Vista uses some form of super firewall, that hampers access to the Internet. By default outbound communications are on by default and inbound communications are based on filtering content and behaviour. The Vista firewall works in conjunction with Defender and UAC to protect users. I defy anyone to say they have seen the firewall popup and ask for permission on some program using the internet, because it hasn't. And there are only certain inbound ports open such as Internet, Mail and a few other necessary ports that are on. FTP services have to be turned on to be used.
Most of the Apple ads are based on taking advantage of gullability of the masses and I am surprised by the comments here because TechRepublic members are supposed to be better informed than the average consumer, but usually it is not evidenced by the caliber of the posts. People actually use something before commenting on it and don't slam it if you haven't bothered to try it or investigated how it works.

It's about damn time! Microsoft is very late to this party. It is inexcusable for a company selling nearly $4 BILLION in software and services every single month, and pocketing $1.5 BILLION in profit after all expenses every single month, to be so late with this. And don't remind me that XP SP2 had it. Still way too late. Mac OS and Linux had it years before that. Only a monopoly can get away with such failings.

I've been in the working computer industry for more decades than I like to admit. I've worked with a great many kinds of computers from handhelds to enterprise-class mainframes. The only computer I have ever worked with that ever became infected with malware was running Windows. And, that infection occurred because of a really stupid design defect in Windows and other Microsoft software. Furthermore, out of all the people I personally know, all of the computers that ever became infected were running Windows. Just a little anecdotal evidence from my world.

It's amazing to me that there are people willing to come out and defend Microsoft like you are. People like you are Microsoft wanna-be's. You are never going to be one of the Microsoft Millionaires. In fact, the vast majority of the 71,000 current Microsoft employees are never going to even come close to joining that club. Even Microsoft cannot afford the $71 BILLION required. That party is O-V-E-R.
Microsoft uses dirty, unethical, and illegal tactics to win. Every time a competitor rises up, they don't win against the competitor by making a better product and winning the business. They do something dastardly to kill the competitor instead. If you want to get the girl, kill all the rival boyfriends?
This leads many people to choose Microsoft products as the "best" remaining choice. There are countless examples of this. The most famous one is the Internet Explorer vs. Netscape Navigator case. Remember: Microsoft was CONVICTED of illegal monopolistic conduct by the United States Government in that one. Do you routinely provide such support for ex-cons?
Unethical and illegal, yet wanna-be's like you still speak up for them. Now, that's really sad.

I am always ticked at how the term "Windows PC" has evolved into PC... I multiboot my PC. if I could easily do so, I'd be running Mac OS and Kubuntu, and use Parallels Desktop, or Cedega, or some other alternative to running windows...
Sorry, but that's just a beef I've had for the longest time, and it's not going to go away anytime soon, if ever, it seems...

I don't own a PC that's running Windows. I have a windows drive for a PC with a removable drive bay, but it just sits on a shelf gathering dust, and the only reason I even keep it around is that it sorta came with the computer (as part of a "use this computer while you do work for my consultancy thing" a while ago) and may some day need to use it again. It's perfectly legal, and perfectly superfluous.
That PC with the removable drive bay, by the way, is currently running FreeBSD, and has none of the problems associated with PCs in the Mac ads. It annoys me, as well, that one of the reasons people in general don't take other OSes for the PC as seriously as they should is stuff like this crap -- where Apple, with a vested business interest in pretending MacOS X is the only alternative to MS Windows, fosters this misconception that PC equals Windows.
I'm still amused by the ads, though.
