RE: Tech startup tips from Spiceworks' co-founder: Building a business plan and getting funded
Hi Scott,

I am starting up a non-profit organization called 'The NW Women's 500 org/Found' and I was wondering what types of funding I could ask for and where I would solicit such funding from.
The purpose of this org. is to create a base of NW women volunteers, hopefully 500 or so to start, that would help local, and major, charites and foundations succeed in their fundraising efforts here in the NW>
Any charity could call and tell us that they want to do a fund raiser in lets say, Seattle, where they need volunteers to walk and sell t-shirts for their cause. I would then send out an email blast to all members detailing the charities request. Members would then sign up in whatever capacity they want until all the positions required are filled. We would then start soliciting help from the general public. By using us as the 'co-coordinator' if you will, of the event the charity is assured of a very successful outcome.
If, however, we do not have the numbers we feel would make the fund raiser a success then we would inform the charity and work with them until we came up with a solution that would generate more volunteers and more donations.
Once this is accomplished, we do the event and the charity has a very successful fund raiser!
Of course, we are only a base from which to work from. We are seeking volunteers from all over the NW, not just from the Seattle area. This way when a charity is having an event and they need volunteers to run/participate in the event we can get the word out quickly. Example:if every NW Women's 500 member were to tell another woman and then she told someone else, and she told some else....well, you see how fast the word would spread all over the NW. (Women love to chat you know!)

So, my question is what kind of business plan style should I use and who should I present it to for funding? As I am the director and I will have a few key staffers working with me all the time to coordinate all the members I feel that they should be paid.
We have the opportunity to have a very, very successful org. that will help women, children and animals all over the world, yet the amount of time required to do this work would require some full time employees to guarantee that our mission is accomplished.
We will be walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day here in Seattle this Sept and with 500 members each raising $2000 or more, well just imagine the size of the check we could present to them!
We also want to go into underprivledged neighborhoods and bring help to those who have no idea where to get help and educate them on women's health issuses and where they can get the help they so desparatelu need.
See, I am a woman and I just love to chat..I could go on but I think you get the picture of just what I am trying to accomplish. Any help you would be willling to share with me is appreciated. Sincerely, appreciated.
Thanks for your time,
