At any one time, a few dozen icons fill my Windows desktop. I like being able to quickly access the files I'm currently working with and keeping those files and/or shortcuts on the desktop makes them easy to find. Therefore, I often steer away from overly complex desktop backgrounds, which make the icons diffiuclt to see.
These fractals however, have me rethinking my background aversion. I'm curios to know any fellow background haters, have a specific picture or type of image that compels them to put it on their Windows desktop.

Noisy desktop backgrounds are generally evil and just make it harder to work. However, I really don't like a plain background either.
On my recent honeymoon to the Maldives I was keen to get some nice shots of the beach, water, sky and palm trees. Not just for a few memories of the island that we were on (Maayafushi - highly recommended) but also to use as my wallpaper. I got some corkers!
Don't tell the wife though

Man I'd love to do my honeymoon in the Maldives. Did you end up spending a fortune?
Thanks Tech Republic for blogging this Excellent collection of New Fractals. Is is really very amazing as to how creative we humans can become. Long live and last this human ingenuity.
... is to turn off the display of desktop icons (right-click the desktop, hover over "Arrange Icons By >" then remove the check from "Show Desktop Icons") and show those same icons on the Desktop Quick Menu just to the left fo the system tray. To enable that, right-click the Toolbar, hover over "Toolbars >" and put a check in "Desktop".
Now I've got a clean desktop, and I don't have to minimize or move whatever windows are open on my screen (and I've usually got four, five or more) before I can access those desktop icons, in the same number of mouse movements or less, although the order is changed.

I have a slew of icons on my 2K machine and I don't avoid overly complex desktop images, but I look for things that are oriented to the right. It irritates me when important photo elements are skewed by icons, so I try to make sure every image has its focus to the right of the screen. Right now there's a Bengal cat on there, and the background is black, so it's very easy to see my icons yet the interest from the cat is there.
When i find an image i really like but is very "busy" i resize the image to a size smaller than my desktop. I then set it as wallpaper, set the position to center, then choose a color that compliments the image for the outside edge. This is where I line up my icons. I still get to have the image I like, and I can easily see my icons.
definately looks like someone got themselves a new and improved spirograph for christmas...
grrr i hate when i go to work on someones computer and your greeted w/ 50 desktop icons. I just want My Computer!!!! WinCustomize.com has a wide variety of nice backgrounds>>>

I do have a few icons on my desktop, though ive found I like ObjectDock which lets you put your most commonly used icons into a neat little toolbar that sits on your desktop. Like on a Mac. Doesnt bog down your computer and makes your icons easy to see. Also some really cool fractals and digital pictures here> http://www.chapter3.net/

I generally set the desktop to black, or, perhaps something very large and simple.
Screensavers are a different idea, tho, and these remind me of my favorites from (X)Ubuntu distros...

Since you started featuring Fractals images, I 've been
downloading the files and using them as desktop and
screensaver in my iBook G4. I really enjoy the view as well as
my peers, always amazed by the images and curious about
the origin.
Thank you all, Autor and Tech Republic

Here is part of the opening paragraph from the Electric Sheep web site:
"When these computers "sleep", the screen saver comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as "sheep". The result is a collective "android dream", an homage to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep."
I can't help but wonder what other information these computers share with each other over the Internet as part of this "Screen Saver". Does anyone know where this information goes?
The potential for disaster is enormous.

These fractals are awesome...some make me feel that I'm swimming in the coral reefs and others as if I was up in space. The colors bring peace and inspiration...Thank you!
Back in the 1960/70 era, wasn't there a toy that you put one geared wheel inside another, then using colored pens you created repeating curves? This stuff looks like that toy - on steroids!
Wonderful!
Wonderful!
Pleased someone remembers it, I still have one. Invented in the UK by a fellow called Fisher, I think, in 1963. I was a management consultant, specialising in OR, then, but did the marketing study in a slack period and gave it the name.
While it is true that strange attractors do have fractal (i.e., non-integer) dimensionality, they are not the same thing. A plane is not the same thing as a car because they both have wheels.
This doesn't make them any less beautiful, but a better title would have omitted the word fractal. Just as "high definition" is being applied in places it really isn't appropriate, "fractal" is an overused word.

I have to agree that the use of the word fractal in the title is a little misleading. To me that word always implies a sense of randomness and these images, although gorgeous, are just a little too symetric to fit my perception of a fractal.
I would be curious to see if any relationship could be found to the new "Theory of Everything" and some of the brane theory models that spring from that work.
In one of the other links to fractal images at TR, I saw one named "Surreal Bracelet" that looked like a good model for one of the doughnut shaped branes predicted by the new science.
At least as well as my primitive 3D mind could perceive.

If people were to write their own scripts rather than pushing buttons, they may see these are not true fractals...the word is extremely overused....
These are absolutely stunning fractals. Some I like better than others. Some should be sent to a glass blower to try and render them in 3-D. I live near Seattle and we have quite the very famous glass blower who lives just N of Seattle! Look him up and he would create your images in glass then the sunlight would shine thru making a stunning work of art for all to admire.
Imagine it....Kiki24k2

Back in 1967 I had a chance to visit CSSR (back then it was Chehoslovakia ) and if I remember well they had great glass blowers in the city Brno I think. Most of their work really look
like most of these fractals.

I just love the peacefulness of that first one. The deep reds and blues strike a note of peace. I think it is that deep red... I would love a carpet like that. The blue is just enough to give it some contrast, some mystery, without overwhelming with its "blue"-ness. Just beautiful. If you still get alerts on this post, I would love to talk to you more offline about this one. Would love it for my desktop image, actually. (I'm using a Coke Blak image right now, believe it or not. lol) I hope you get this.
these just look like lights shone through jellyfish the japanese like to store in aquaria...is our notion of beauty so debased? nature has created myriad incredible fractal-based forms, from flowers to humans, that are far more sophisticated and interesting...
I wonder if it would be possible to "print" them using a ra[id prototyper. I'm going to have to go ask the CAD/CAM guys, as they are the experts on such, at least here.
Very nice images, but Fractals...
They are rather random Sines,
not even chaotic Sines.

Maybe someone here can correct me, but the first chaos model, I saw, was done on a 3D chart, using a computer of course; and looked like a butterfly.
I don't remember how many variables were introduced into that model; but as the attractant changed - so too did the shape of the model.

http://www.apophysys.org has a freeware fractal flame editor, and was mentioned in previous discussions and image submissions for fractals.
Making fractals is a great way to spend time on a computer. If you have any artist talent, now is the time to develop it. There is a lot of free software to make these images available. From the misty translucent Chaoscope to Apophysis and Fractal Explorer. They are easy to find and install and you will be guaranteed to spend hours and hours Making beautiful images the world has never seen.
visible evidence that chaos was created by an artist
order within disorder
Absolutely awesome applications in those links. To further improve the saved images they can be edited in your normal photo editors."Thanks for the links" Love you for that.
