UPDATE: BBB came through for me :-)
Just as previous poster, I was given an "in-warranty" repair (free) and a 90 day warranty on the unit after that. I should have the laptop back in about a week. I never received an explanation why HP is not dealing with it directly, but I'm happy that they have agreed to do the right thing and repair my computer.
