Check my System
Just remember that it would never have been recommended as an option if Greg hadn't started this whole thing.

Thanks for both packages.

jd

What has always miffed me is when it shows more memory in use than is accounted for in the task manager, and am hoping these packages will show that better as I run off to play with my new toys.

When I suspect a virus, first thing I look at is how much memory is in use.

Great. Just suffered through 24 pages of explanations, but none of the download links work.

I'm curious to see what it does.

Edited after install: It's a trial version. ehhhh.... It gives names to everything thats running with paths... But, I'm sure I could have figured that out myself. So. ehhh

Yes it's free and yes it does all of the above, and more.

To show from where it's running, just rightclick and select properties. So sorry, but I am not that impressed with this Security Task Manager.
I too agree with Mochtar, I have been using Process Explorer for some time now and Mark has developed one usefull tool that is hard to match.

Process Explorer is very complete.. so I dont know why pay for something that others can do for free.. (like comparing Acrobat Pro with doPDF happy ) ..
and the other thing, process explorer is portable... happy
I sitll like the review though.. it's always good to know of all the products out there..
Cheers

Didn't know about Process Explorer. Now I know what all those generic svchost.exe processes are doing. Those always bugged me...

Thanks!

Thanks for the link. It's funny because I just got an email from PC World today that included yet ANOTHER process manager software (also free). Here's the link in case anyone wants to try it.

I was pretty stoked to try the security task manager trial until I read your post. Downloaded process explorer instead, since most people seem to have the same POV about it. Very cool...Thanks!

Thanks Mochtar
I've been trying to track down why vista runs my HP like a monkey runnin from a aligator after log in...runs like crazy for a good minute to min-n-a-half...and task manager just says duh...it runs using a third of my 3.5 gigs and spikes my dooly several times...
I need all the tools I can get as long as I'm stuck trying to use my Vista..
I do all my serious work on my XP...were old buddies...been through a lot of good times together...
thanks for the good words bro...

... Bit off-topic
Mochtar 2nd Apr 2008
Well, I know this is going off-topic a bit (sorry about this)

But;

What you could do is run Unknown Device Identifier; http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html (it's free just dumps an URL on your desktop which you can simply delete) to identify and find all of the devices/drivers for your hardware.

Obtain a Windows XP COA and medium and say bye to Windows Vista! happy

Alternatively, run FileMon together with Process Explorer to see what is causing your machine to run bog-slow;

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx
(free as well happy )

To bring my reply back on topic, a little tip to all;

If you copy Process Explorer to any location on your hard-disk (so don't run it from the net or from a zip-file) you can select Options > Replace Task Manager.

And that's just spiffy happy

Thanx much
jim@... 25th Mar 2008
Thanks for the link.
Process Explorer is much better, use it evertime
Thanks Greg for showing this piece of software, but between Process Explorer and hijack this i'm pretty much already taken care of wink
Had a strange phenomenon after running the tool and removing some processes (As described by the tool as being dangerous). After a restart my network connection would indicate that it was live but email (Outlook Exchange) and internet access were both blocked?!... I am not sure if this is related to the tool but seems odd.
