I posted about the new details that Bill Gates revealed about Windows Home Server yesterday:

Would you prefer to buy it as software or as an appliance? What price point are you hoping for?

Software

I would prefer Software. That way I can put my own OEM PC's together.
My test PC is running to smoothe. It might be time to throw something at it.

Pricing? I can almost guarantee that it will be overpriced like all of M$ software.
It will probably fall somewhere between XPPro and Win2003.
That is what I really want to know. with a teenager in the house. I really want to manage how late she is online and limit her access at certain times. kill myspace during Home work hour, boot her at 11pm on school nights etc.
Windows Home Server might deliver, but you'll probably need Windows Vista on your daughter's machine. WHS doesn't have Active Directory or Group Policy.

However, Windows Vista provides the capability to do what you're talking about in terms of limiting your daughter's access. This kind of access control is actually the most useful feature - along with desktop search - that I've discovered so far in Vista.

I think Windows Home Server will allow you to configure these Vista access settings from the server, but I haven't tested that yet so don't hold me to it.

It looks like MS has bolted Vista's parental controls to IE7, so anyone using another browser, such as Firefox, should completely bypass them. A third-party software package like Webroot's Child Safe would probably be more likely to do the job.

While I can understand the financial incentive for Microsoft to once again tie their browser software to their products, I really believe this is one area where they should have forgotten about their fight for browser market share. With all the predator-types on the prowl and the trash being posted everywhere, MS should have thought more about protecting kids, even if it meant more cost/code/production time. Bill Gates and his wife do WONDERFUL things in the world through their foundation, I wish some of their unselfishness could have been reflected in this corporate decision. Yes, business is business, but if you want to be a respected leader in anything, you sometimes have to make selfless decisions.
