Talent is not a substitute for competence. I can have the job talent but still be incompetent and I can be competent but lack the job talent. Employers want their employees to be competent and have the talent for the job.

All things being equal competence comes first and talent second because competent employees can do the job while talented employees who are incompetent cannot.

We should strive to hire employees who are competent and who have the talent for the job.
