can i switch off auto updates and use this method for all updates on 2003 servers.

rebooting is currently a big deal here as we have SQL boxes in use 24/7 so im constantly disrupting someone each time a change needs making.

As the article stated; it wouldn't replace rebooting. I would not imagine it would be applicable to all updates. Only way is to find out.

Here's a quote "Not all security updates support HotPatching, and some security updates that support HotPatching might require that you restart the server after you install the security updates", just like the article said. KB 897341
