I agree with most of your views. I had not considered the global security issue of Microsoft opening its source to China. That is definitely an interesting angle to watch as time progresses.
As we stand at the edge of 2008, my personal view about open source is that the next great development is going to be project collaboration. This is beginning to happen, and if we see more collaboration between internet and desktop technology areas and a move for hardware resources to go open source we could start to see some powerful projects being developed. The resource is potentially huge and way beyond anything that commercial companies can muster. A new PC and Internet paradigm could be in the early stages of conception.
