While I understand where this point of view is coming from, my experience, as a programmer/analyst, is that the cube environment is extremely counter productive... the reason? .. is precisely for the reasons given for openness and sharing that are constrained by the cube walls. When the cube community is configured with multiple projects, the multiple project communications, either by phone (some times open speaker phone conferences) or in cube meetings, and just general phone discussions, creates a very disruptive level of noise-soup that is very costly to other projects and thus, the bottom line of projects and the company. I hate cubes and believe isolation is the most efficient environment in the short and long run.
