I love my mac but hate their support
I reluctantly "switched" to a Macbook Pro w/3GB of RAM
18 months ago due to a new job as an sysadmin of a
mostly mac network. I love the fact that its so similar to
unix with all the unix commands and tools available. It
runs windows in Parallels concurrently with OSX as fast as
any pc can run it so I get the best of both worlds. There
are definitely some shortcomings in the UI, but add a
mighty mouse (wired btw, because the bluetooth ones are
sluggish) and the shortcomings are somewhat rectified.
My biggest complaint is the incredibly slow turnaround
time for mac support. Their phone service is about as
worthless as any current support line but the real kicker is
that you're typically left without a machine for 3~8 days
when its "in the shop". Not exactly HP business class
service. Unfortunately you can't even get a support
contract for anything better and your best bet is to spend
the $1K to get access to the "real" support database with
all the fix information that the techs look at. Plus spend
some extra cash on hot-spares for each kind of Mac on
your network so your users won't be without while the
systems are in the shop. Outside of hardware support the
software still has a few bugs here and there but I do
honestly have less headaches with Mac users than with PC
users.
