I really don't agree with ISPs grumbling over bandwidth usage, providing bandwidth to end users is their purpose in life; not providing useless 'value added' services like email hosting and silly portal sites.

The very idea that they could charge both end users and content providers for the same bandwidth is absurd. As for 'unlimited bandwidth' and 'fair usage policies'; don't get me started!!!

A bean counter somewhere made the financial decision to not light up more fiber yet, but continued to sell service to more and more customers.

And like in any good company, you cut costs where you can. The problem is when you cut cost in a way that costs you your customer base.
blah blah blah PO'D AT GREEDY COMPANIES blah blah blah

So while they're supporting regular internet users OK they should suddenly be forced to support video on demand for people who don't pay extra and don't buy their TV on demand service?

Maybe we should force the greedy b#(*#&$%ds to not charge more and force them to buy whatever is needed so everyone can simultaneously watch stupid utoob videos at once?

We'll pass restrictive govt regulations that don't allow them to charge more, and then make them buy more fiber equipt than they can afford, (but of course its the stupid bean counters, they really have unlimited money stashed somewhere?)

When they're all bandwidthed out and all graphical the spam can pass at agood speed, even more users will want to use it for hi bandwidth uses. Then we'll end up like the govt subsidized freeways, to busy to be useful during the times we want to use them most.

It's really sad. People want to gripe about the greedy oil companies charging too much when in reality they're using too much but oh, no, a big company couldn't be doing a good job providing services to people.

Instead of berating their neighbor for driving a gas hog 4x4 or hummer, they berate the provider of what makes them run because they are not present to defend themselves and these people are too stupid to know or accept basic economics or it is just 'cooler' to be PO'd at big companies.

The sad lack of education about economics and how biz works is apparent.

There has to be a balance met. As the providers sell to more and more people, they have to be expected to provide more bandwidth.

To get you to use their service, THEY offer faster and faster connection speeds. If they sign a contract with you to provide you a 5m connection, how do they have a right to complain about you USING that 5m connection?

And video is not a "suddenly" thing. It has been around on google for a while now.

Also, I have not complained about big companies, nor greed. I have mentioned poor business decisions that affect the customers, causing the customers to find a different vendor.

Example, Dell was king for a few years. Why? It was easy to buy from them, and they quickly handled any problems you might have. Later on, someone decided support was an expense costing them money instead of an asset that draws customers to them instead of their competition.

They cut the support quality by outsourcing, and people became unsatisfied with that support. The support was the REASON people bought dell in the first place, and now that reason was gone.

If you don't take care of your customers, you lose your customers.

I totally agree, they have oversold their services. If you
want to double the number of customers you have (and
therefore the amount of load on your infrastructure) then
you need to invest and double the amount of bandwidth
you can provide. It's very simple really. If you sell
someone a 20Mbit 'unlimited' connection you shouldn't
complain when they want to use that line to download at
full capacity 24/7.

This is probably a case of marketing types not
communicating with the techies or so called 'business
analysts' not fully understanding the technical implications
of business decisions.

I'm sure ISPs in the rest of Europe provide a better
service? Can anyone comment?
