1) Come in dressed like Columbo - That's not what they were saying. I took it as come in in normal business dress and don't put on a suit and tie just to ask for a raise.

2) I don't see it as asking them to say no, a LOT of bosses I've worked for are very edgy when you ask for a raise...why? Because they think you are going to jump ship and go somewhere else.
