Thanks for the great how-to! As an IT consultant for a high-profile company, things like this should go into the handy tech-bible. Appreciate your work, keep stuff like this coming!

Macs on AD
sidney.wong@... 10th Sep 2007
You can join Macs to AD, but it's not a simple task. You have a couple of options:
1. Make a schema change to support the Macs
2. Use the method prescribed from this link. http://www.macwindows.com/ADinstruct.html

There's no other easy way to get Samba working with Windows AD unfortunately.

Though I will not try to convince my boss because we only have two macs in the corp and she is dead set against them. Again, thanks very much.

Go and have a look at the products of Thursby Software
who make the excellent ADmitMac.

BTW, for some humour, can I suggest you do the following
in a couple of months.

1) Upgrade the two Macs you have to Leopard.
2) Ask your boss if you can attach a couple of UNIX-
certified systems to the network.
3) If she says Yes, wave a copy of the X/Open certificate
for Leopard under her nose.

More seriously, a good manager ensures that their
employees have the tools necessary to do their job and
shouldn't let their personal prejudices or ignorance get in
the way.
This is for someone who has never before attempted to connect a MAC to a windows network. You can find the same thing on the Apple website. Uses for connecting to a workgroup are by very small shops with no need for robust up time, since the network is exposed to viruses and the PC's are exposed to users installing the next greatest thing. Any admin worth their salt will use Active Directory and that is not easy with a MAC. It still remains difficult to secure the MAC and allow user access to it from the network and vice versa. This article is too rudimentary to be of use.
i think you missed an important issue...How to share Windows resource with MACs on an Active Directory powered network??
Would this decrease the mac's security?
