Times change and so do demands
I would have agreed whole heartedly with you about a year or two ago but with the changes in technology, demands on It has changed.
A law firm I worked for wanted 8 copies of a film in 8 locations quickly. Email systems still with 5 - 10 MB limits cold not cope and the security frailties of FTP were not to be trusted plus in legal circles IT is slow to catch up. used a simple open source P2P where only identified clients could download and we were away. Was a hashed fix from a couple of the IT guys MP3 sharing their music but it worked well.
That old phrase never say never springs to mind.
IM and VoIP is a big part of UC from microsoft. If you can ping over a message and want more of a conversation feel email is too slow. Free international calls... is one case for VoIP. especially if departments are getting squeezed on Mobile and hotel phone bills.
New Technology can always be used for business just needs a little creative application. Never says Never.
