I know what you mean about South Carolina, it is a very small tech community here. They are seem less active on a "per programmer" basis than they were in NJ. Another thing that I have noticed here is the type of work. Living next to Columbia, it seems like many of my colleagues are working in COBOL on AS/400 systems; it is fairly hard to relate with them except at the level of the development process itself. And few shops here are doing any kind of interesting projects.
