I personally use Seamonkey mail for gui based mail client, if Seamonkey didn't exist I would probably be using Thunderbird.

I do not know the political reasons behind the move, with 2 quiting at the exact same time however im sure there is good reasoning behind it. I just hope it does not hinder the project.
Mozilla Corp spun off Thunderbird to its new subsidiary, MailCo, in a restructuring.
