You are right, that does not sound so bad... but it is still way more work than it should be.

I've had similar experiences with product. It was a complicated setup to use caching in a DMZ and the app/db behind the DMZ. I had lots of problems with corrupted export backups used for synchronized dev and prod environments. I think that was fixed in later versions. I always avoided major changes in the infrastructure areas of the product - to avoid issues like this article.
But the product was very robust once it was setup and in steady state. We used it for a global company website. The portal uptime and performance exceeded the AS/400 in that shop (at about 1/10 the price in hardware, resources, and support).

Oracle is rock solid software... but getting it up and running, or working with it on any level is sheer misery. There is a reason why Oracle consultants can charge so much money, and people are willing to pay it.

I just got confirmation from Oracle Support that even though the process we went thru is the simplest and quickest way to recover, it's unsupported. In other words Oracle wants you to go thru the long involved process, they don't want you taking the shortcut and twiddling a few entries in the LDAP directory.
... having "support" is a reason why companies often choose to pay for software, even open source software. What Oracle seems to be calling "support" though is not worth paying for, it seems.
