If you're on Windows and need X capability, I've found Cygwin/X to be ideal, and it's also free. Of course, you could also keep a flash drive with DSL on it and have a full Linux environment at your disposal, too.

Otherwise, PuTTY was my most-used app when I had to use Windows to get to my *nix boxes.
