Netware had a character Orientated Windows system "COWS" with a login script. many companies used KixStart for there login scripts before AD came out. I still write scripts, command file batch files to do SQL maintance or AD updates or install patches. I know they will work and quick not like XML. How many times has replication failed on you AD infrastructure with no messages or errors.there has been 100's of occasions I have fallen asleep waiting for a windows server to paint the screen over a global WAN or SAT link. many 3rd world countries have extreemly poor telephone or comms or unreliable power to provide a 4Meter satilte dish. But perhaps Microsoft would be better off buy ing Solaris licences

I have been running Server2008 for about 6 months now and if I had it to do, I would not upgrade to this OS. Granted it does have some new/revitalised features-Server Manager,BDC (RoDC),powershell, installingonly what you need, the other issues I seem to be having would in no way be worth it. Numerous issues with USB devices-not wanting to recognize several different models and then dropping them constantly, not allowing the Administrator access to my own files, then telling my administrative account, I need admin rights to perform a simple function such as changing file permission on my pen drive after it finally recognized it. And talk about the cumbersome Networking menu! You renaming things and putting them in inaccessible places is not in my opinion improvement. The system coonstantly crashes and locks up. (I will concede that my hardware maybe a few years old). Configuring your desktop has become so cumbersome...all I want to do is change the color and background image and the screen resolution. What did I do to deserve going to so many different places? A task that is consumately easy on Win 2000/3. So I have had my lifes worth of CD's stolen and the rest that I have, are getting scratched up. So I decided that I will copy them to a NAS I bought! The files show up like a 100k file and I cannot copy them. Then I decided I wanted to use another browser other than IE. They all run so slow, compared to IE. Try finding and using event viewer! Now those new functionality etc I would consider good, the firewall looks really good too. My overall experience has been a disaster so far. I will get some new hardware and try again. Let me know how well it has served you.
