The Problem with Education
There's a problem with education these days, at least I noticed it when I went for my degree. They don't necessarily teach you how to think.
Oh sure, they show you how to slap something together and how to use a book as a reference, or might even give you a closed book "write a program" test, but many of my peers came out with a degree but no real head on their shoulders.
Many of them want their businesses to send them to training -- I prefer training only when I have some downtime between projects and I'm itching to travel. I'd much rather the company just reimburse me for books (I buy them on my own dime now) and teach myself.
Like you, I didn't have a mentor but I've done a fair amount of it to others. Sometimes I think I would've had an easier route if a mentor was available to me, but I'm not so sure that I'd like to trade in my "school of hard knocks" lessons. I've learned quite a bit about what works and what doesn't, and I draw on that wisdom daily. I'm still a youngster compared to many of you guys and I'd still like to connect with a mentor because I believe that it's a valuable asset to draw upon.
