The biggest difference between the two versions is the
directors. The Original is widely recognized to be directed
by Howard Hawks (though credited to Christian Nyby, his
editor) and the remake is John Carpenter.

Howard Hawks is one of the greatest directors ever, John
Carpenter is a B director.

Hawks populates his film with people that I would like to
be trapped in the Arctic with. All the Hawks signatures are
there, including clever overlapping dialog and the Hawks
leading lady, a woman who is sexy be still one of the
guys. And oh, Dimitri Tomkin's powerful music score.

Carpenter, in true B movie style, delivers on cheap thrills.

If you like B horror (and part of the fun of horror films is
cheap thrills), Carpenter is he man. If you want a horror
film that is also a good film, Hawks is the choice.

By the way, if you turn off the picture and just listen to
the sound track on the original, not only can you follow
the story but it is just as entertaining as watching the film.
