I prefer the private sector, even though I am in government at the moment.Unions had their place at one time...during the industrial revolution. But now they only seem to reward the lazy and hinder the ambitious. Egalitarianism at its worse. There is absolutely no incentive to do more and be innovative. The only thing you get from being a good worker is - more work. Usually the work that the slackers are not doing. And no compensation. No credit (managers take that), nothing. If anything, it also makes you an object of suspicion by managers who fear that you could be a threat to them, so they make sure that these people are kept in the pits and buried in meaningless and mundane work, until they too become bitter, old civil servants - like the rest of the lot. But on the upside, the benefits and job security are nice.

What's the difference between taking a phone call and receiving an email from a spouse or child? One requires immediate attention (unless you allow it to go to voicemail). Otherwise there is no difference.Would an employer balk at someone making a doctor appointment using the company phone? What about making an airline reservation using the company computer and Internet connection? ..... If it should be against company policy to use any company equipment for any personal use, does that mean a person would be in violation if she made a personal grocery list on company letterhead using a company owned pencil? How about if she just typed it using the company owned software and then emailed it to her husband asking him to pick up on the way home? Some employers allow these things, others don't (mine does not, except in case of emergency). The ones who don't probably used to, but employees took advantage (give 'em an inch and they take a mile). One shouldn't "expect" these things though, unless they are specified in your contract or work rules... It's easy enough to simply ask.

Ok, I don't think we are in real disagreement on much of this here. But your post was not about wasting time so much as about activity appropriate for work, meaning time you are getting paid for.'If at some point I led you to beleive that I was saying that "all" boards are a waste of time, that was certainly not my intention, nor my point.'Great! but there are lots of valueable uses of blogs that have nothing to do with my job. Say, if I were to go to a gardening blog, I would not be able to justify how that helped me be a better DBA or programmer or Network Admin. This may be a great place to interact with other gardening gurus but I work in IT."But I do appreciate how you focused on a half line in my posting to criticize. Next time perhaps you could read the whole thing and bring something a little more inciteful to the table."Now lets not get testy. I could have easily quoted your entire one paragraph post, and then responded to it line by line or word for word, but I find reading that type of post tiresome. And I don't enjoy reading them. The reason that you received my post was mostly due to your little jab in the last line where you inferred that you were posting 'before' work, and not using company time to do it. You had raised the question to the group, "Is participating in this and like forums acceptable online behavior at work, on the clock?" I wanted to make my case for saying, "Yes, it is."Again, I don't thing we are really disagreeing on the topic. But then we are a hospital, and anything could be used to infringe a patient's privacy. So are supposed to call each other, and then we can send emails like, that patient we discussed on the phone has their treatment cancelled. In practice this isn't the case. Most users, especially if they have a laptop, want their data local so they can work from home. The problem is if they get canned, or the laptop gets stolen, no one will have access to, or even know that the information exists. Our IT policy is that after they are notified that the person quit, their network share and domain account is erased, so no patient info should be where only you can access it.

If at some point I led you to beleive that I was saying that "all" boards are a waste of time, that was certainly not my intention, nor my point. It was meant to point a general finger back at the people, us, that do the monitoring of others and have to make sure that business machines are protected. As you know, and anyone else in IT i'm sure, we tend to get an idealistic and almost godlike sense of self when it comes to this job. A "we know what you do, we can find out, and we can turn it off if we want" feeling.I just wanted to point out that even we can stray from the sidelines here and there. And we even try and justify everything we do on the internet as "training". Anyone who says it's all "training" should look a little harder at what they use the internet for. Just because we work with technology and use the internet to help us research and troubleshoot doesn't mean that we can justify all the time we spend on it during business hours. I just hope that we can give that slack we take for granted, or not really notice, and give it back to the others in the company. Otherwise we are truly taking on a godliek roll and I don't really want that much responsibility. It's only my thoughts."If you think that all we do is blow off steam here. Maybe you are on the wrong blogs? "Not exactly sure how you got that from my posting, but if that's what you think I think you do here, you are most certainly mistaken. But I do appreciate how you focused on a half line in my posting to criticize.
