Based on this article I can`t see anyone upgrading to Windows 2008. Are these really the only new features you like?
In theory you should use these features once. On install time. Unless your server is on Air Force One and crossing time zones like there was no tomorrow I don't see the "Windows Server 2008???s new Server Management console allows for time and time zone configuration" feature to be of outstanding use.
How about a review in upgrading to 2008, Active Directory migrations and of course scripting and automation.

Also migratrion from both versions of 2k3 would be cool.

Derek,
Thanks for the effort. It seems that there is a lot of contention as to what 2008 offers us. Although I agree the article was a bit blaase(sic) I think the point has been made and it's time to move on. Please don't take the comments personally, it's just that we would like to see some "worthwhile" updates and improvements from the big M.

I think Ill stick with the old install and just not go through the install of 2008 and each software package my business needs on the server. (Why spend Days installing and setting up; just to experience a more streamlined install package?).
Once you install your companies software and have it run for a bit under normal to high usage then tell us how 2008 compares in Disk Access, memory Usage, System crashes/lockups, overall throughput, etc. Thats where a server's true Pluses and Minuses are at. You are doing searches on your server? I don't even log in to my server except to check backups, stats, or repair a problem etc. I use my desktop for the "Pretty" searches.

Installed the 32 bit version on an AMD 64 without issue or problem. However, the 64 bit version has the same driver version issues that Vista suffers from. I really want to use the 64 bit version because of the virtualization.
I agree with everybody else...
Try this article again when you have something REALLY cool to talk about. So what if you have to answer a few prompts when you install. You don't normally have to do hundreds of install of server software.
Personally I like the many questions. It's stuff I won't have to worry about forgetting and now I'll have to make a check list so I don't forget and accidently leave PST on by accident.
I also don't do very many searches from my server.
If these three items are the greatest thing since sliced bread I'll stick with 2003. Not worth the trouble if that's what we've waited 5 years for.

wow - buy w2k8 so you can do an install with less prompts, or just stay with w2k3 and you dont have to do an install at all!
poor article - i would have thought that you would have at least focused on the one true selling point of w2k8, namely the improvements in terminal server which includes the rdp over https web access option - D'OH!

This is the best W2K8 has to offer? How about the terminal server? It has some really nice things like application sharing.
The items discussed on this article are very superficial and do not have any weight on my decision making process. Please get to the real stuff. Please talk about Performance, Security, Functionality, Active Directory, Networking, Disaster recovery, interaction with Applications and stability.
I'll be glad to read about all that...

I agree with you, I need to know everything about AD and GPO, network security is and issue very relevant.
I think that this article is only publicity of the product.

That was a waste of my time. I hope that isnt the kind of improvements we can expect out of server 2008. Please write an article with that heading when you really do have something exciting.
"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!"
Have any one you whiners even used '08 yet? I have 2008 Enterprise RC0 up and running right now on a test server so I can get a feel for it BEFORE I comment about it. I agree that this article doesn't even BEGIN to touch some of the awesome features that are to be available in 2008, but Derek is just pointing out some of the beginning features on first install. Give him a break! If reading this article is such a "waste of time" as I read one whiner said, how much time did you waste complaining about it? LOL!

Yes it was a waste of time.....and he is not complaining about it, he is stating his opinion, which I agree with. The title of the article was "three EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS"; I could see how the streamlined install process is somewhat exciting, when compared to everything we've known for the last 12 years. But that's it; the server console is not that exciting and I don't know anyone who searches from a server, especially one in production use.
So yes, the author did cover some "improvements" in Server 2008 but hardly exciting to the majority of the readers, in my opinion. The title was rather misleading, and I was disappointed.
I do not consider anyone's comments a waste of time unless they resort to immaturity.

We're on the Internet. The old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!" has little meaning here.
I agree some of the comments are a little brutal but none so far have been downright nasty.
Hopefully the author will read these and walk away with a better understanding of what is expected when your title says "NEW AND IMPROVED!!!"

The issue with me is the over rated title. I was expecting something in the lines of hardware support, virtualization or as stated in my previous post migration and active directory.
When I read an email title from TechRepublic saying "Three exciting improvements in Windows Server 2008" I simply expect more. Sure it took me more time to whine about it, but at least I wrote what I felt. Otherwise I loose the same amount of time reading it and I get to keep the sour feeling of keeping it to myself.
Other good points to review would have been application support and compatibility (particularly after Vista's fiasco). Hardware support, someone already added a comment regarding that a 64bit Windows.
Will my servers still run? Particularly non Microsoft services. My current Win2003 doesn't support the sound card my machine has. Mmhhh not good if you want a VoIP service running on it. Show us figures and if you don't have a real outstanding set of features to show off don't put the title "exciting".

Once we've bottomed 32 bit Vista, had yet another look at 64 to see if there's any software for it.
By about 2010 I should think...
It doesn't matter what AWESOME features are in there, we still haven't recovered from our surpise, not to mention surplus cash at the ones in the last version.
What you are smelling might be brown, but trust me it's not coffee.

Maybe - "2008 more efficient installation than prior versions" would have brought the article into perspective. And from that I would say it was a good article.
From this article title I was expecting something more on the lines of of the "10 things to consider when making a Windows Server 2008 upgrade decision" article I just read.
=================================
"Greatest thing since sliced bread"
weve added red white and blue food coloring to alternate slices to make it look pretty.
(although now it tastes like #&@#.

So my server will now be as slow as my Vista desktops? Cool...I guess...[sarcasm alert]
I looked at some of the other articles by Derek. All of the others besides this one are very in depth and interesting.
This is only one blemish on an otherwise stellar track of article writing.
Derek, I now look forward future articles written by you about 2008. I'm sure the next one will have some meat to it.

I haven't been this excited since I got the chance to shell out ?1200 quid for a better photo album.
It's this sort of stuff that makes you want to work your ass off so you can afford new isn't it?
Are you nuts?
