Balacing act between the marketing and finace dept with a CIO will be very difficult to handle. Unless the CEO of that company should support the CIO.
It is certainly difficult act.

Business Strategic Planning: Joe wants to upgrade his fleet, Bob wants capital equipment, the budget won't cover both. Neither wants to compromise. Many long meetings and what's the result? Feuding between Joe and Bobs sections. Not always but I've seen it.
11 You do not enjoy corporate politics. Otherwise back scratching to get the job done this could be worse if you are female.
There are not a lot of time in a day to do all the job functions. ( I assume we are dealing with 8-hours per day shift.) Who are we kidding?! We are a society of workalohic.
... Maybe it is possible with a great staff members supporting CIO.

You actually enjoy technology and know something about it. If you like actualy building systems that work forget about increasingly non-technical management positions.

#12 You understand you service three types of customers. The user, the business and the greater IT organisation that enable and support your core business. You have the ability to manage up and down and across from the CEO & Board to the Propeller heads to your long list of IT suppliers.
CIO roles require great flexiblity. From what I can understand after reading this article, this role needs to be really good at not only managing IT but understanding and utilizing technology to help organization improve sales, production and busines processes and customer service. This role needs to have the vision and capabilities to formulate strategies to help achieve his or her organizations business goels. In addition to serving as a positive role model for co-workers, successful CIO must also be capable of inspiring others to recognize, develop, and apply their talents to their utmost potential to reach a common goal.
Actually I was the perfect CIO for 11 years and did all of those things well. Of course, I was also company president, CFO, treasurer, secretary, PC tech and systems installer. A world of "me".
The problems start when you add other people - what do you mean I'm wrong? NO, there is no other way. I don't care what you think.
Anyway, I've found that doing each of those 10 things is pretty easy, doing all of them is a nightmare - I can't imagine anyone having it as a career goal unless their other goal was being certified insane. Or maybe that should be a prerequisite.

Separating perspective and perception. Way too many Directorate level managers are concerned with perception.
Instead, they should pull their head out, and match reality with perception.
As an example, one prominent, Director of a "World Class" Institution boasts how good the IT Security is at his facility.
One then can "Goggle" certain names and document key works. And the ITAR "Compliant" Document will pop up.
This is outside the IT security perimeter, using NO PASSWORDS!
The Qui Tam Lawyers still have no clue. And the Managers that enable this workflow should be removed from their post, but will probably be promoted.

all were poor performing CIO's and yet continue to get hired by well-known companies. Sometimes it is more valuable to have friends and C-level connections than it is to have actual good job skills... LOL
Unfortunately, it typically boils down to who you know not what you know....

The greatest skill a CIO or any professional can have these days is to be able to learn any skill. There are so many new IT tools available that CIO's must consider for their organization, one being workload automation. It's a great way to reduce the need for 100's of IT people.
