Would you prefer your mobile experience totally devoid of advertising (considering that you may have to perhaps shell out a little more for that in course of time)?
I would rather that my telephone be just that. I want it to make and receive telephone calls. I don't want it to surf the web, my eyesight is lousy. I don't care to send or receive text messages- especially at 3:00 in the morning from a spammer! The camera is okay- I have used mine one time but can see a value in having a camera handy- car accidents come springing to mind.
I have a PDA. I have a computer. I don't want an all in one device that can reach out and touch me no matter what, no matter where.
Downtime is a good thing too. And being a bit less connected to facilitate my downtime is a price I am willing to pay.

My phone is a phone, nothing more nothing less.
The only exception would be other phone features (it's still a phone) like caller ID, call forwarding, etc.
I don't think I've ever paid for a cell phone (not directly at least) as I always take the freebie.
