I think there's an expenive home router from Linksys that allows you to attach a hard drive to it. I think it has some kind of interface that allows you configure access permissions to it on the LAN/WAN. Cool stuff! I think it's the WRTSL54GS. Hopefully the price will come down on it. It's a little too expensive at this point.
Possibly the wrt300n but definately the wrt350n . The usb socket supports a flash or other usb external drive.
As a sidenote; the USB currently works with the linksys firmware only. dd-wrt will probably support the usb port in later releases though I believe the current v24 rc5 does not yet. I'm unsure about Tomato, OpenWRT or the other firmware.
I've got a budget NAS drive on the network but I was thinking of sticking one of my old flashdrives in the router to store logs unless I go all out and forward the logs to my workstation's syslogd.
In my case on the NAS side, it's time to replace that budget drive box with a proper NAS (raid5, gigabyte nic, more than 250 gig storage). Plugging a drive into my router won't provide the space, raid or the degree of access control I suspect.

This box is something a little more special than just another NAS box. I was recently on Netgear training on this box and have one in my own infrastructure and a few with clients and can say this little box has pretty much all the features any small business or Home network can use plus a few more!
Myself and a few other companies here in the UK have been using them in place of Win SBS as the box has so many features including redundancy, FTP, Web Hosting, User and Group level account restrictions, Self Backup including to external site, mirroring to another device, 3 USB Ports, 1 Touch Backup to external USB Drive, Print Server facility, single gigabit on Desktop version and Dual Gigabit on the rackmount and other things that I have yet to utilise myself.
Needless to say the price could be double (like CISCOs) and it would still be worth purchasing. The rumor mill has it that the physical NAS will also be being put on the Netgear Lifetime Warranty (NOT THE DRIVES THOUGH).
This is one box that should be in every sysadmins arsenal of hardware! and I emplore those of you who would normally scoff at a device with this price-tag to read a little more into it
