I've never had a hard time with sw until this putrid UI was forced on us. Horrible, simply awful, fire all responsible.

They took the input of millions of users (pretty sure most were K-6 age school kids)to decide on how the "Fluent User Interface" should work. I like the acronym for the "Fluent User Interface" - pronounced Phooey.
This is causing a lot of wasted time for the engineers here and all others who have as much as 20 years of experience with the old menus.

Setting aside Xbox, Microsoft should finally learn that its hardware has always been a flop. Focus on bringing Office 14 out scarily soon (and that will also deflect from Vista's bad publicity) and the Facebook development and integration.
Hmmmm... apart from a few overheating problem due to shoddy chinese manufacturing, the 360 seems to be doing okay. Not sure how many have been sold, but it's millions.

Doesn't inherit the same lithium battery problem as the Zune (which MS denies it ever happening) the battery swells and the screen cracks as a result.

Yes, Vista since I got it on my new computer three months ago has not filled me with joy - usual complaints.
However MS could save themselves: a nice Service Pack to put everything right, that's all we need. With SP1, we could load all that software that doesn't work, attach those peripherals etc., etc.

It's all so similar to how ME was released, "quick bring out a system that's based on the 2008 OS, sod server 2008 we'll finish the development with all the bug reports from this release to the public...we'll call it Vista".
Summer 2008 "hey let's bring out the full and improved version of Windows 7 now that everyone was forced to have Vista or buy it".
The short of it is, it isn't worth buying when they are bringing out the version of windows that Vista should have been.
I don't dislike MS software I use it myself and support it, but I don't like being pushed into buying something that isn't ready for release, or will not work with a majority of software from the last 3 years, I'll stick with XP thanks...until 6 months after Windows 7, cause that will have SP1 by then.

I have three PCs at home that all run the OS great! (Home Premium and Ultimate). If you can't afford new hardware, don't buy the new OS - get it?
If its a matter of "I don't like that things have changed" then I have a DOS 6.22 floppy disk with your name on it (Enjoy Wolfenstein 3-D and Wordperfect.) Get real - You have to learn new things to keep up with the changes, or stick to XP...
The only other excuse people have, is that Vista won't run their apps - I've yet to see this be an issue on my Vista Ultimate machine, where I run 3-4 year old games, old versions of drawing/illustration apps, and some high-end business applications (thanks compat. mode!)

I have two versions of Vista -home premium and business.
Home premium version runs on an Acer 5720, with an Intel dual core T5250 and 1GB DDR2.
Business runs on a Dell Inspiron 1720 with an Intenl dual core T7300 and 2GB DDR2.
So h/w new and v.expensive and loads of grunt. Result good?

I understand your dedication to uSoft and they do deserve congratulations for making the common man accept computing and bringing the world of computers to nearly everyone.
However the open source movement is surely gaining ground and I encourage you to try Fedora 7 on your desktop and see your desktop takeoFF. I have been using Linux on my Laptop for years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Three Cheers for ALL the OS's out there!!

You definetly haven't seen the latest version of UBUNTU, Desktop GUI efects are SPECTACULAR!!!, vista becomes NOTHING compared to it. The fact that linux is free makes it a real source of features that common people want to see in a OS, not what MS thinks is better or prettier. I do use Vista and xp everyday but I also have linux and osx, diversity is the key, don't go nuts and stupid, think before write.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a big MS fan. They are doing what they do to make money and they make pretty decent products. Consumers should just reject Vista and eventually the HP's and Acer's of the world will side with the consumer over the software distributor. About six months ago I installed Ubuntu on one of my older systems, and I've been shocked at how much I can do with it. It is harder to learn because I've been used to DOS\Windows, but the support community is phenominal. After dropping 500+ for a Server 2003 license I was shocked to find all those tools available on this free OS. God Bless the Linux world!

When you do a "ver" command at the prompt, XP is Version 5.1.2600 (XP Pro on this machine).
So, I would think that would make Vista 6, and not 7.

You might lump ME in with 98 since ME was just a bastardization but since 98SE was so good I'd hate to put the two together.

Remember: Many editions keep the same version number, and the 9x/NT cores shared version numbers, regardless of server or workstation status:
1 - Windows 1.0
2 - Windows 2.0, 2.5
3 - Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, NT 3.51
4 - Windows 95(4.0), NT 4.0, Windows 98(4.1), Windows ME(4.2)

On October 13, Eric Traut, a senior Microsoft engineer working on virtualization technology, gave a presentation and demo of virtual server/pc. He showed virtual machines running several versions of windows, from 1 thru to 7. See here

Code will be modified so that DirectX 10 can be installed on XP and games and hardware can utilize this. I am sure microsuck already has heard enough screaming from card makers alone, not to mention gamers.

That you can't open with your current version of Office, go to http://openoffice.org and download the most recent version. It will both open, and save in proper format, .doc, .xls, and .ppt file extensions. I use it frequently for old files. It hasn't messed me up yet.
I had forgotten all about openoffice.org You're right, Tiger Two, with the most recent version, it opens any format. Too bad that MS$$ sometimes prevents us from opening Excel and Word files, for which we paid huge sums of money in the first place.

That is why I post from a Mac. I have pitched my last penny into the Microsoft well.
We have been trying an experiment for the past couple of months- the SO has tandem Office XP and Open Office on his XP Pro box. He has actively moved the things that he works with on a daily basis into Open Office and does everything through the Open Office tools. The only one that he has been dissatisfied with is Base. He tried, but didn't care for MySQL. So he still uses Access for his database needs. But he also is actively looking for an alternative, either for Mac or Linux.
He has Mac envy. I don't blame him.

I still haven't figured a way to get my partner's e-mails out of Outlook 2000 and into Thunderbird working on a Vista Home platform. Any help would be HELPFUL!! :-
The only thing that I can think of would be to archive them to documents and set up a file structure. The only other alternative might be to forward them to the Thunderbird account. I don't know of a tool outside of Outlook that reads .pst files.

One client still runs Win98 on about 1/2 his computers so he won't update to Vista soon, but everybody else running Vista likes it. Office workers love the Office Ribbon, and I got my first non-MS application using the Ribbon concept, and I like it.
