Office 14

Oh please, please, come out with a usable version of Office again!
I've never had a hard time with sw until this putrid UI was forced on us. Horrible, simply awful, fire all responsible.

Stupidity Tax?
nick@... 10th Jan 2008
(William, thanks for the link... I was aware of these)

I think buying an aftermarket solution for this amounts to paying a penalty for someone else's stupidity. We shouldn't have to pay for - or even bother installing - a solution that shouldn't be needed.

It's mindnumbing that toolbar customization was taken away. Does anyone think that MS did this because over the years they were bombarded with complaints that the toolbars were customizable?

Oy.

They took the input of millions of users (pretty sure most were K-6 age school kids)to decide on how the "Fluent User Interface" should work. I like the acronym for the "Fluent User Interface" - pronounced Phooey.

This is causing a lot of wasted time for the engineers here and all others who have as much as 20 years of experience with the old menus.

They removed features that are forcing the adoption of SharePoint (routing and others)to accomplish the same things.

Between Office 2007 and Vista, I personally am headed to Linux and Open Office - if I have to pay with my time learn something new, it might as well be free.
Setting aside Xbox, Microsoft should finally learn that its hardware has always been a flop. Focus on bringing Office 14 out scarily soon (and that will also deflect from Vista's bad publicity) and the Facebook development and integration.

Hmmmm... apart from a few overheating problem due to shoddy chinese manufacturing, the 360 seems to be doing okay. Not sure how many have been sold, but it's millions.

Also, keyboards and mice seem to be pretty popular.

Understand this, though. MS will not be making the devices. There's no need. They'll do like they always have and sell OEM solutions to UTStarcom, Samsung, Motorola, Palm, etc.

It'll be a smartphone with a Zune look. Really the only difference between my UTStarcom PPC6700 and a theoretical MS equivalent of an iPhone are things like the "Social" function of the Zune, an FM tuner, wireless Zune software sync, and the overall look.

I love my Zune 30. It beats the pants off of the 5G iPod I had in every way except third party accessory availability.
With regards to the ZunePhone, a recent article in Fortune quoted Bill Gate's as saying:

"No, we won?t do that. In the sector of such smartphones, we are purely concentrating on the software with our programme Windows Mobile.?
I hope the ZunePhone will be available in brown. Brown rocks!
Doesn't inherit the same lithium battery problem as the Zune (which MS denies it ever happening) the battery swells and the screen cracks as a result.

vista must go
andrew@... 9th Jan 2008
heres my thoughts on vista.

vista. i hate it and so do most people i know that have tried it, or bought a new pc or laptop that comes with it, later to find that xp isnt even recognised. i thought to myself, surely microsoft have something to say? so i took a leisurely visit to the vista page, and omg, theres a link to "join the community". lo and f***ing behold, "we're sorry, the page you requested could not be found". could it be that there is no community? oh bill, how are you gonna get out of this one. Microsoft Windows ME v2, take the hint.

Yes, Vista since I got it on my new computer three months ago has not filled me with joy - usual complaints.

However MS could save themselves: a nice Service Pack to put everything right, that's all we need. With SP1, we could load all that software that doesn't work, attach those peripherals etc., etc.

Come on MS! A chance to get in someone's good books at last

It's all so similar to how ME was released, "quick bring out a system that's based on the 2008 OS, sod server 2008 we'll finish the development with all the bug reports from this release to the public...we'll call it Vista".

Summer 2008 "hey let's bring out the full and improved version of Windows 7 now that everyone was forced to have Vista or buy it".

The short of it is, it isn't worth buying when they are bringing out the version of windows that Vista should have been.

I don't dislike MS software I use it myself and support it, but I don't like being pushed into buying something that isn't ready for release, or will not work with a majority of software from the last 3 years, I'll stick with XP thanks...until 6 months after Windows 7, cause that will have SP1 by then.

UBUNTU

Simple to install, easy to use, reliable, and free. I encourage everyone to use this on desktop/laptop systems that do not support XP and come preloaded with Vista until Microsoft will get their sh*t together.

http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition
I don't understand all of the "vista hate" out there.

I have three PCs at home that all run the OS great! (Home Premium and Ultimate). If you can't afford new hardware, don't buy the new OS - get it?

If its a matter of "I don't like that things have changed" then I have a DOS 6.22 floppy disk with your name on it (Enjoy Wolfenstein 3-D and Wordperfect.) Get real - You have to learn new things to keep up with the changes, or stick to XP...

The only other excuse people have, is that Vista won't run their apps - I've yet to see this be an issue on my Vista Ultimate machine, where I run 3-4 year old games, old versions of drawing/illustration apps, and some high-end business applications (thanks compat. mode!)

If app compatibility is your issue, how will Linux help? If you have another issue, what is it? Do you not like the UI? If so, how did you stomach 5 years of XP's Fisher-Price GUI?
I have two versions of Vista -home premium and business.
Home premium version runs on an Acer 5720, with an Intel dual core T5250 and 1GB DDR2.
Business runs on a Dell Inspiron 1720 with an Intenl dual core T7300 and 2GB DDR2.

So h/w new and v.expensive and loads of grunt. Result good?
Home premium version runs kinda ok, but hey don't stress it out too much by running multiple bloatware MS apps at the same time though.
Business version is a nightmare, continual crashes and problems using IE Explorer and Outlook, even windows media player has problems playing more than two albums in a row with my getting the now infamous vista "not repsonding" message. To add to the woes the ever so unhelpful MS update process frequently makes matters worse rather than better (I have now switched auto update off to kepp my sanity). And before people respond with remove add-ins and other s/w that has been installed; been there done that, and all to no avail.

Vista like all MS s/w appears to be all about how it looks and whether it works reliably (let alone to six sigma std's as some of us s/w houses now do) seems to be an after thought.

A previous reply suggested we admire their (MS) genius. Not sure we should admire them that much given their dubious business/competion ethics. I sometimes wish that Bill & co were treated the same way way back when they took PC-Dos and made it MS-Dos!

Guys get used to buying software.Y do u think Ubuntu is free? Its because its creators dont find it worth to attache a price tag to it.
Y do you think people buy microsoft software? Its because its worth buying and has value for money so instead of busy hating, try to appreciate and give consructive feedback.
Imagine linux has been around and free for many years but still very few have embraced it.
Congs to the Vista guys and Microsoft in general for always being creative and dynamic and making our lives better.

I understand your dedication to uSoft and they do deserve congratulations for making the common man accept computing and bringing the world of computers to nearly everyone.
However the open source movement is surely gaining ground and I encourage you to try Fedora 7 on your desktop and see your desktop takeoFF. I have been using Linux on my Laptop for years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Three Cheers for ALL the OS's out there!!

You definetly haven't seen the latest version of UBUNTU, Desktop GUI efects are SPECTACULAR!!!, vista becomes NOTHING compared to it. Take a look here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7QraljRfM Also you are definetly so deep in capitalism that can't realize it's a matter of bussiness and not 'worth of price to pay for'. The fact that linux is free makes it a real source of features that common people want to see in a OS, not what MS thinks is better or prettier. I do use Vista and xp everyday but I also have linux and osx, diversity is the key, don't go nuts and stupid, think before write.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big MS fan. They are doing what they do to make money and they make pretty decent products. Consumers should just reject Vista and eventually the HP's and Acer's of the world will side with the consumer over the software distributor. About six months ago I installed Ubuntu on one of my older systems, and I've been shocked at how much I can do with it. It is harder to learn because I've been used to DOS\Windows, but the support community is phenominal. After dropping 500+ for a Server 2003 license I was shocked to find all those tools available on this free OS. God Bless the Linux world!

What?
VAR1016@... 10th Jan 2008
What??
Let's see, Unix has been around since 1970 could be said about early 60's as well. But we will take 1970. I can sit at a UNIX terminal in 1970 and one today and run a system with ease.

This cannot be said of MS and their products. As I said before, 'they are not intuitive to use", so why are you ragging on the guy who says that it is garbage. MS has has plenty of time to produce good product but they appear to want to control everything, (games, phones, etc) you get the picture. Gad now they are in the Ford Focus. Can you see the headlines now... "CAR CRASHES BECAUSE MS HAD TO REBOOT>> AGAIN!"

The one thing that I do like is that they have given us a consistent email system but we can do without the other baggage--- VISTA.
Windows 7?

4 - NT 3.5, 4.0
5 - Windows 2000

When you do a "ver" command at the prompt, XP is Version 5.1.2600 (XP Pro on this machine).

So, I would think that would make Vista 6, and not 7.

3 - Windows 3, 3.1, 3.11
4 - Winodows 95
5 - Windows 98, SE
6 - Winodws ME...blech
7 - Winodws XP
8 - Vista

You might lump ME in with 98 since ME was just a bastardization but since 98SE was so good I'd hate to put the two together.

You can't really mix the server products in there as they are a completely different animal.
It refers to the mobile version of windows...:)
Remember: Many editions keep the same version number, and the 9x/NT cores shared version numbers, regardless of server or workstation status:

1 - Windows 1.0
2 - Windows 2.0, 2.5
3 - Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, NT 3.51
4 - Windows 95(4.0), NT 4.0, Windows 98(4.1), Windows ME(4.2)
5 - Windows 2000(5.0), Windows XP (5.1), Windows 2003 Server (5.1)
6 - Windows Vista(6.0) Windows 2008 Server (6.0)

As you can see, many "generations" shared a root version. Windows 7 would be an entirely new elevation of Windows Technology, thus requiring an entirely new version number. I would expect future Vista and 2008 server improvements to take the 6.0 number to 6.1, 6.2 respectively as bugs are worked out and enhancements are made.

By the way, every system in my house runs Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate extremely well. If you can't afford new hardware, don't complain about the new OS, and enjoy your old equipment on an old OS platform.

I'm pretty sure Server 2008 is 6.1, and Vista becomes 6.1 with SP1 installed (as it updates the kernel inline with Server 2008's).

It amazes me how many people still manage to **** up the windows numbering system (google it!) thinking that XP is not 5.1, etc. It was, essentially an updte to Windows 2000, hence keeping the 5.x number, followed by 2003 as 5.2

AS for Windows 7 (in response to the guy below) MinWin is just a component of Windows 7, speciafically an extrremely cutdown kernel as microsoft pushes towards a more modular system like the linux kernel. this resulted in the minwin 'product' which will form the basis of windows 7 core and possibly other platforms like mobile devices. it's designed to be super lightweight and 'ringfenced' to lower the attack surface.
On October 13, Eric Traut, a senior Microsoft engineer working on virtualization technology, gave a presentation and demo of virtual server/pc. He showed virtual machines running several versions of windows, from 1 thru to 7. See here

http://www.istartedsomething.com/20071019/eric-talk-demo-windows-7-minwin/

Since he's a Microsoft engineer, I would expect him to get his version numbers right.

Windows 7 is probably not what you expect, since it's alternate name is MinWin. It's basically a Windows kernel without the graphical interface (or much else) intended to run in text (or even headless) mode as an embedded OS.
Code will be modified so that DirectX 10 can be installed on XP and games and hardware can utilize this. I am sure microsuck already has heard enough screaming from card makers alone, not to mention gamers.

That and elephants will grow wings
I think you are all wrong. I think now that MS is touting its
Sync product for
cars, it will sue Apple over Apple's use of the term (also
with a capital "S") that
is ubiquitous throughout OS X.

Next, having conquered car radios, MS will strive to take
over the idiot lights on
your car and the engine management systems. Imagine
driving down the
freeway at 70 mph and your windshield suddenly goes
opaque blue with a tiny
message in the middle of it stating:

"Unrecoverable error at: x0079bb200"

When sued over the ensuing multi-car pileup, MS will
claim that it is the DOT's
fault for not making MS compatible freeways.
ALL I WANT FROM MICROSOFT are all my files, all my Excel and Word files dating back to at least 1995 or whenever... I paid for my MS, all the Microsoft Office whatevers, and I want to be able to access my precious old files. No more BS from Microsoft. Thank you.

That you can't open with your current version of Office, go to http://openoffice.org and download the most recent version. It will both open, and save in proper format, .doc, .xls, and .ppt file extensions. I use it frequently for old files. It hasn't messed me up yet.
I had forgotten all about openoffice.org You're right, Tiger Two, with the most recent version, it opens any format. Too bad that MS$$ sometimes prevents us from opening Excel and Word files, for which we paid huge sums of money in the first place.

Lots of people, especially businesses, big and small are very reluctant to switch to Vissss$$ta... it would mean getting the 2007 Office, retraining people on how to use the new Excel and Word and the rest. Microsoft should spend the next five years developing a good, cheap, RELIABLE OS, instead of sending us half-baked products and gazillions of patches.

Thank you.

That is why I post from a Mac. I have pitched my last penny into the Microsoft well.

We have been trying an experiment for the past couple of months- the SO has tandem Office XP and Open Office on his XP Pro box. He has actively moved the things that he works with on a daily basis into Open Office and does everything through the Open Office tools. The only one that he has been dissatisfied with is Base. He tried, but didn't care for MySQL. So he still uses Access for his database needs. But he also is actively looking for an alternative, either for Mac or Linux.

He has Mac envy. I don't blame him.

The only thing that I can think of would be to archive them to documents and set up a file structure. The only other alternative might be to forward them to the Thunderbird account. I don't know of a tool outside of Outlook that reads .pst files.
Oh no! Not another iteration/version of Vista! Just what I needed for the new year!! (yech!)

Vista
lmenningen 9th Jan 2008
One client still runs Win98 on about 1/2 his computers so he won't update to Vista soon, but everybody else running Vista likes it. Office workers love the Office Ribbon, and I got my first non-MS application using the Ribbon concept, and I like it.

All the MS mockers are really in the bottom minority.
