There is nothing wrong with being at a 'different' level. I like to work on my car on the weekend; in the car world, I'm a hobbyist. What's wrong with that? I don't feel denigrated.
Someone who only uses software but likes to keep up with industry is a hobbyist as well. Again, there is nothing wrong with that.

Any technology has the hobbyists, the trademen and technicians, and the professionals. This isn't a class structure; people just end up having different levels of involvement.
