As I recall, that drive required an RLL controller in order to get the full capacity. Using it with an MFM controller would work but would lower the capacity by 33%. I believe that there was no difference in the manufacturing process of the RLL vs. MFM drives; the drives with fewer defects on the platters were sold as RLL.

Also, those drives didn't retract the heads when powered down. A park utility had to be run before removing power. Otherwise the head assembly would stay where it was and could possibly (likely) 'crash' onto the platter surface(s).
