Debug commands
If I remember right the MFM drive low-level command was usually DEBUG G=C800:5
For RLL drives I think it was DEBUG G=C800:17
Then you'd pull out the multi-page bad sector list and hand-enter every cyl, sector, and track combination. Of course once you low leveled it, you could then use SpinRite or Norton's Disk Doctor to run the drive through a heavy duty test and to find the best interleave settings. Then you get to FDISK and FORMAT the drive - of course if you were using DOS 3.3, you would have to format a 42MB drive in two partitions - one 32MB partition and a 10MB partition.
